Some providers lock the phone you get to their network so it can only be used at their network. Some do lock the phone to the SIM card you've got, so the phone can only be used with this SIM card only.

When a phone is unlocked it can be used on any network with any SIM card.

there is no need to unlock ur fone. if u want to change service provider u can unlock it so it can read any sim card. thats all.

Hi,
Unlocking is a very useful action. Because you would be able to use your phone in any part of the world other than carrying a different phone when your going abroad. And you could quitely slip-off the roaming option which we would need to pay around $400 annualy or somewhat.

Again differences in every country icon_biggrin.gif

Roaming is normally free (never heared of paying for this option).

And before I forget it: most SIM locked phones which came with a Pay-as-you-go (or PrePaid) "contract" can be unlocked by your provider for free after two years usually. Part of the contract, may differ in your country.

Yes,
In sri lanka the phones are not soled along with the connection or pay as you go. What we are supposed to do is, initially purchase a phone with or without a Sim Card, and then get connected. The chargers differ. We've supposed to pay for the Phone as well as the Connection which is (from $15-$25). Monthly rental packages or rather postpaid packages and Prepaid packages which i think you refer to Pay As you Go, are available.

But again we dont get the phone as a contract basis. So we are supposed to pay for roaming. It amounts based on our options. There are some who even pay more than $400. I feel unlocking the phone and purchasing a sim card in foreign would be cheaper.

Presently they are introducing a Monthly installment basis packages which are similar to contracts. But here we only sign a contract with company for the payment of the equipment but not the connection.

Bye,
