Sony Ericsson plans to sell the Xperia Arc, a slim Android smartphone, in the U.S starting on August for $600.
The Japanese-Swedish joint venture said the Arc, which is compatible on AT&T's 2G and 3G networks, will be sold directly through its website, as well as Amazon.com, Newegg.com and Buy.com.The Arc features a distinct "arc-shaped" form, and integrates a 4.2-inch display with "Mobile Bravia" technology, which produces enhanced color, contrast and sharpness. The Android-based device also comes with an 8.1-megapixel camera with a faster f/2.4 aperture lens -- for 50 percent more light over typically phones, for brighter, less noisy photos. In addition, users can record 720p high-definition video and view it on a television via a built-in HDMI connector. Sony Ericsson unveiled the Arc in January to lackluster demand. After several losing quarters, the company is aiming to turn around its struggling fortunes by transitioning to more Android-based smartphones, from an aging portfolio of feature phones. The Arc is the first product in a comeback effort.
