London residents may experience problems with their mobile devices during next summer's Olympic Games, illustrating how network traffic is becoming a consideration in advance of major public events.
"There will be maximum strain on the network," said London's Mayor Boris Johnson, who added local officials face challenges shifting mobile phone capacity in advance of the 2012 Olympic Games. As a result, the Mayor is cautioning the public may not have total access to their mobile phones because of anticipated extreme overload caused by throngs of residents, visitors, athletes, Olympic officials and other users transmitting data, pictures and communications on limited networks. "We are doing a huge amount of work to ensure there is enough coverage," Johnson said. "But we have got to be realistic...people will want to download huge quantities of data, which will put a massive strain on the networks" The challenge epitomizes the challenges faced by carriers and operators as consumers shift to smartphones and shift to more data-heavy usages on their devices. The city is planning to install additional equipment and expects the physical infrastructure will provide coverage in the face of anticipated huge network demand. "I am confident we will crack it," the Mayor added. The potential interruption of mobile communications may affect the operational aspects for the Olympic games. Transportation managers, security officials and Olympic volunteers monitoring the Olympic Park's nine venues are all expected to use smartphones to relay important security and public updates, and will depend on the city's infrastructure to support the increased bandwidth. London Olympic sponsor BT acknowledged the potential problem of having the network handle the equivalent of 6,000 fictional books of data being transmitted each second. The company plans to roll out 500,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, some of which will be free, in time for the games. The city managed to muddle through mobile strains surrounding last April's nuptials of Prince William. Amidst reports of signal-blocking equipment and warnings of inappropriately-timed cell phone ringing, both Scotland Yard and the Metropolitan Police were able to pull the one-day event off without a hitch. The Olympic Games are scheduled to take place in London from July 27 to August 12, making it the first city to officially host the modern games three times, having previously done so in 1908 and 1948. London was awarded the games in July 2005, beating out Moscow, New York City, Madrid and Paris.
