Apple announced more than a million iPhone 4S devices have been pre-ordered on the first day of availability, as the company gets a boost from Verizon and Sprint.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company’s 4S broke the iPhone 4′s pre-order record of 600,000 handsets ordered in a single day. AT&T said it received 200,000 orders in the first 12 hours of availability, while Verizon’s delivery date for the device slipped to one week after release and Sprint had only the 32- and 64-gigabyte models available after day one.
Last year, when the iPhone 4 launched on AT&T alone, Apple reported it sold 1.7 million devices in just over ten days. This year, with the added help of Sprint and Verizon, the company is on track to easily eclipse that mark.
Adding Sprint and Verizon to an iPhone launch gives Apple a much larger pool of potential customers, which is likely the largest reason for the device’s impressive order numbers. Demand for the iPhone 4S appears to be much higher than analysts originally predicted.
Most analysts dubbed the 4S a disappointment after it was unveiled last week. Apple’s newest handset featured no major hardware redesign from its predecessor, no increase in screen size and no LTE capability.
The device’s Siri voice recognition technology, A5 processor and improvements to the camera were seen as worthy improvements, but not enough to bring existing owners to upgrade.
But Apple, Sprint, Verizon and AT&T’s websites all at one point exceeded capacity when the 4S went up for sale, defying analysts’ expectations.
Apple has the highest selling smartphone in the U.S. in the iPhone 4, and the 4S looks to continue that trend against steep competition from devices like the Samsung Galaxy S2, Droid Bionic and the looming Galaxy Nexus Prime.
The initial reaction to the iPhone 4S may have left many thinking it would have a tough time competing, but the device is already off to Apple’s best start yet, and it doesn’t go on sale until the end of the week.
