SBC Communications, parent company of Cingular, has agreed to acquire long distance phone company AT&T Corp. for $16 billion. The deal would create the 2nd largest regional phone company.
"It's a done deal," said SBC spokesman Larry Solomon. "We just agreed to acquire AT&T."
"Today's agreement is a huge step forward in our efforts to build a company that will lead an American communications revolution in the 21st century," SBC CEO Edward Whitacre said in a statement.

On February 1st, Verizon will officially launch its 3G EV-DO high-speed service. In preparation for the announcement, phones are being shipped overnight to stores nationwide. The new handhelds planned for released for the network include the LG VX8000, UTStarcom CDM-8940, UTStarcom XV6600, and Samsung A890.

In the mid-90s, Motorola released the StarTAC, a cell phone with a revolutionary clamshell design taking the world by surprise. Years later, it became a staple in Motorola's product portfolio as North Americans everywhere became flip phone fanatics.

Siemens slipped to fifth place in the cell phone global rankings as LG Electronics posted strong sales of 13.9 million handsets last quarter.
The news comes amidst growing concern regarding Siemens' mobile phone division; struggling financially and rumored to be seeking joint venture partnerships.

In South Africa, a local doctor has invented a pill bottle that uses cell phone technology to remind patients to take their medication. Named the SIMpill, the device targets patients taking medication for long-term diseases; who missing a dose can have potentially life-threatening consequences.

More and more people are living the high-tech lifestyle. And as gadgets get cheaper, more people have them, and lose them.
In a British survey, in London alone more than 63,000 cell phones have been left in the back of cabs in the past six months; that's about three phones per cab.
Over the same timeframe, almost 5,000 laptops and 5,800 PDAs such as Palms and smartphones were left as well.

Amidst gloomy profit estimates, palmOne CEO Todd Bradley has announced his resignation. While not officially stepping down until late February, Bradley will stay on as an adviser until the end of the fiscal year in May.
Ed Colligan, President, will assume role of interim CEO while the company conducts a search for a permanent replacement.

Ferrite beads, commonly used in computers to stop interference, can be used to reduce handsfree cell phone radiation to almost zero, claimed Professor Lawrie Challis, chairman of the Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Programme in the UK. Internet search engine company, Google, is planning to develop technology linking users to a free telephone service via broadband internet connection.
