Amid the flurry of merger activity within the wireless industry, Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest phone company, is taking a closer look at Sprint.
In the wake of the SBC and AT&T announcement, people close to Verizon say information gathering and due diligence has begun this week, though no formal discussions have been initiated. Representatives from Verizon have declined to comment.

Sony Ericsson signed a deal with the WTA Tour to allow tennis fans to send text messages to players via on-court screens. The $88 million six-year sponsorship is a first, using wireless technology to allow the audience to communicate with players.
"We're looking at being able to send SMS messages to screens on court," said Miles Flint, Sony Ericsson president. "It's also feasible to put tennis games and the promotion of the players into phones."

Cingular Wireless and palmOne Inc. today announced the availability of the Treo 650 smartphone, the first device of its kind to take advantage of the carrier's EDGE (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) network -- the fastest national wireless data network in the country. A University of Utah study concludes that young drivers talking on cell phones drive like the elderly; moving and reacting slowly with increasing risk of accidents.
Published in this recent journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, the study found that 18-25 year olds talking on phones responded just as slowly as 65-74 year olds without phones when reacting to brake lights from vehicles ahead.

Contrary to the flurry of partnership and acquisition rumors that have been speculated, Siemens will hold onto its profit-losing mobile division and has no intentions of selling.
"Our company is working on a reshuffle for the unit and new strategies will be introduced to help reverse the handset business," said the official who refused to be named.

Verizon Wireless and Warner Music announced an agreement to sell music video downloads to mobile devices. Through Verizon's high-speed VCAST service, consumers will be able to download content at broadband speeds.
"We believe services like VCAST, which employ 3G technology, will quickly become one of the most important and popular distribution platforms for music and music-related content," said Michael Nash, senior vice president for Internet strategy at Warner.
