Entry Level Cell Phones Drive 16.3% Growth in Shipments

The worldwide mobile phone market showed signs of recovery from the first quarter of 2005 due to impressive shipments of entry-level mobile phones to both developing and mature markets. According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, worldwide mobile phone shipments totaled 188.7 million units in the second quarter, increasing 7.3% sequentially and 16.3% from the same quarter one year ago.


New Verizon Wireless PC 5740 EV-DO Card

Verizon Wireless and UTStarcom announced today the immediate availability of the Verizon Wireless PC 5740 wireless PC Card for use on Verizon Wireless' Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) network. With the PC 5740 Card, customers can take advantage of Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess wireless broadband service that provides access with average speeds of 400 - 700 kbps based on Verizon Wireless' network tests in more than 50 major metropolitan markets and 57 airports in the nation.


America Online Debuts Mobile Search Services

America Online today announced that it is testing a suite of new AOL Mobile Search Services that give mobile users easy access to the AOL Search service, Pinpoint Shopping Search and AOL Yellow Pages. Now available as a public beta test, the AOL Mobile Search Services let users search the Web, comparison shop for products and access local listings from their mobile phones, smartphones and PDAs.


Bad Customer Service is Top Reason Consumers Switch Carriers

Despite the increased use of new technologies intended to improve customer service, such as automated phone systems and live chat over the Internet, poor customer service is the primary reason that consumers switch service providers, according to results of a study released today by Accenture.




Qualcomm and Access Bring i-mode to MSM Chipsets

Qualcomm and Access Co., Ltd., a global provider of mobile content delivery and Internet Access technologies, today announced that Access' i-mode Global Profile, a profile in Access' NetFront Mobile Client Suite, will be supported on Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipset solutions. The availability of Access' i-mode Global Profile solution on select MSM chipsets provides device manufacturers with accelerated entry into the global i-mode market and ensures a wide variety of next-generation devices for i-mode operators.

Samsung Launches Satellite DMB Phone that Slides and Rotates

Samsung Electronics announced the launch of its latest satellite DMB phone (SCH-B200 / SPH-B2000) with a unique "slide and rotate" form factor. Samsung's B200, which was first unveiled at MIPTV / MILIA in Cannes, France last April, is the most recent addition to its growing line-up of satellite DMB phones.


Motorola and Yahoo Plan Apps for Mobile, Auto, and Home

Motorola and Yahoo! today announced they intend to collaborate to provide consumers with easy access to Yahoo!'s core products and services on millions of Motorola Linux-based mobile devices, broadband-enabled products for the connected home, and through Motorola's forthcoming iRadio solution, starting in 2006. Motorola and Yahoo! plan to make these services available to key operators worldwide to increase consumer adoption of mobile data services.
