Within minutes of the tragic London bombings last week, news sites showed location video footage - mainly from camera phones - sent by members of the public. According to director of news Helen Boaden, the BBC quickly received 30 video clips, which aired on broadcasts and online within 20 minutes of the attack. Boaden called it "a new world" of digital media distribution.

Drivers who use cellular phones while operating their vehicles are at an increased risk of crashing, according to a recent study commissioned by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The fourfold increase in crash likelihood was consistent among drivers, with male and female drivers experiencing similar levels of risk, as well as senior drivers and drivers under 30. The IIHS study underscores the need for 21st Century Insurance's public safety billboards, which remind drivers to put down their cell phone and "Just Drive."

A Forrester Research survey indicates that businesses are adopting mobile applications faster than they had planned. Nearly half of the respondents have deployed mobile applications like email, calendaring and employee content - 18 percent faster than originally planned for 2005. The survey of more than 1,000 network and telecom decision-makers at North American and European enterprises evaluated communications adoption and spending plans.

Siemens recently succeeded in completing the first live data transfer with SkyMAX, a new end-to-end WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) solution based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard, in its test lab in Milan, Italy. During the live link between a modem and a base station in the 3.5 GHz frequency spectrum, data was transmitted at a top speed of up to 12 megabits per second in 3.5 MHz bandwidth. Transmission rates as high as this had only previously been achieved with early proprietary systems. Siemens will be one of the world's first companies to offer standard-compliant WiMAX radio networks, including end devices, to fixed and mobile network operators.
