Mobile Satellite Ventures (MSV) announced today that, using its existing satellites, it had successfully completed the first proof of concept for MSV's next generation hybrid wireless network. With minor modifications to a standard CDMA 2000 cellular phone and base station, MSV has proven the technical and commercial feasibility of its planned next generation hybrid network. This network will feature a mobile satellite component with an integrated Ancillary Terrestrial Component (ATC), both using a common, mainstream wireless air interface. This architecture allows the deployment of handsets indistinguishable from standard cellular units.

The United States Federal District Court for the District of Massachusetts has granted an injunction against Boston Communication Group, Inc. (BCGI) and Cingular Wireless, forbidding them from continuing to sell prepaid wireless services of the type that were found to be covered by Freedom Wireless' patents. The order follows the jury's unanimous verdict on May 20, 2005 that 32 claims of two of Freedom's six U.S. patents on prepaid wireless were valid and infringed by defendants BCGI, Cingular Wireless (a joint venture between Southwestern Bell (SBC) and Bell South (BLS)), CMT Partners, AT&T Wireless and Western Wireless (recently merged into Alltel Communications, Inc. (AT)), as well as the Court's September 1, 2005 ruling that the two Freedom patents at issue in the case were fully enforceable.

Lucent Technologies and Ericsson today announced that it has completed upgrades of Cingular Wireless' third-generation UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) networks in Seattle, Phoenix, and Dallas/Fort Worth to support HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology. Cingular is now using the HSDPA networks to provide simultaneous voice and mobile high-speed data service for customers currently subscribed to its UMTS service in those markets.
