Enterprise customers are seeing new business mobility benefits as Sprint continues an aggressive build-out of its Power Vision high-speed network. Launched in July, the Power Vision EV-DO (evolution, data optimized) wireless service has expanded to more than 141 major markets and more than 250 airports nationwide, and will be accessible on various devices to about 150 million people in over 220 major markets by early 2006.

Qualcomm and its wholly owned subsidiary, SnapTrack, Inc., filed suit on November 4 against Nokia Corporation and Nokia Inc. in federal court in San Diego for infringement of eleven of Qualcomm's patents and one patent owned by SnapTrack. Qualcomm's lawsuit includes patents that are essential for the manufacture or use of equipment that complies with the GSM, GPRS and EDGE cellular standards (the GSM family of standards) and other patents that are infringed by Nokia's products. Patents that are essential to a standard are those that must necessarily be infringed to comply with the requirements of the standard. Qualcomm's complaint states that Nokia is infringing Qualcomm's patents by making or selling products in the United States that comply with the GSM family of standards. Qualcomm seeks an injunction against Nokia's continuing sale of infringing products and monetary damages.

Sprint today announced the availability of Nextel Direct Send Picture, a first-of-its-kind service that allows Nextel subscribers with capable Nextel phones the ability to send and review a picture quickly and easily, all while on a Nextel Walkie-Talkie call. The picture simultaneously appears on both the user's and recipient's phones during the call - so they can both view and discuss it without changing between voice and data services. This capability builds upon the Direct Send service launched last year that utilizes the Nextel Walkie-Talkie button to send contact information and transfer the data into another subscriber's contact list.

Nokia recently learned from a Qualcomm press release that Qualcomm has filed a complaint for alleged patent infringement against Nokia Corporation and Nokia Inc. in San Diego apparently involving some 12 alleged essential patents.

Nokia today announced that it has started deliveries of the first device in its new Internet Tablet product category, the Nokia 770. The sleek, pocket sized device is Nokia's first Linux-based terminal product and is dedicated to convenient Internet browsing and email communications over Wi-Fi.

Cell phone users are increasingly comfortable with mobile data services but continue to worry about content and price, according to the latest Mobinet study of how 4,000 cell phone users in 21 countries use their phones. The study has been conducted eight times since 2000 by management consulting firm A.T. Kearney and Judge Business School, Cambridge University.

Across the 15 countries covered by the TNS study, 13 percent of all mobile phone users said that they use MP3 or digital music players on their phones daily or weekly. While the United States ranked last in the study, with only four percent, 26 percent of those polled in South Korea report regular listening of music via their mobile phone. In Hong Kong, 23 percent of respondents reported using their phones to listen to music; and 19 percent of those surveyed in the U.K. also reported regular usage.
