Today Google launched a portable version of its Gmail email service, providing users access to their Gmail accounts directly from their mobile devices. Through the free service, emails are automatically synchronized between cell phones and computer accounts, regardless where Gmail is accessed from.

Sprint Nextel today announced the details of its participation in the Federal Communications Commission's Katrina Lifeline Program. Through the program, eligible customers in the 92 Gulf Coast counties and parishes affected by Hurricane Katrina will be able to apply for a free wireless phone and service. Existing Sprint Nextel customers affected by the hurricane who qualify for the program will receive a credit of 500 minutes for four months from the date of activation.

Cingular Wireless today announced the upcoming launch of Cingular Video, an on-demand streaming video service that delivers fast, personalized access to high-quality video clips on consumers' high-speed capable (3G) phones.

MTV Networks has agreed to become an investor in privately held Amp'd Mobile and will provide video clips and other content for a wireless service that Amp'd plans to kick off this week.
The two companies will develop joint marketing and promotions across MTV Networks' brands and screens. Additionally, MTV Networks will make an investment in Amp'd and appoint Jason Hirschhorn, MTV Networks' Chief Digital Officer, to the Amp'd Board of Directors.

Mobile e-mail startup Visto has sued Microsoft for allegedly infringing on three of its patents related to how information is handled between servers and handheld devices.
Visto asserts that Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 is a blatant infringement on Visto's patented technology. According to recently released mobile phone market share data from IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, LG Electronics has taken the number two spot across all mobile phone manufacturers in terms of shipment volumes in the U.S. for Q3 2005. After selling 7.8 million handsets nationwide, LG's overall market share rose to 19.6%.
