Mobile ESPN today unveiled a suite of wireless content and features designed around the upcoming 2006 baseball season.
Giving customers access to personalized text and video coverage of their favorite teams and players, Mobile ESPN subscribers can also access their ESPN.com fantasy baseball teams.
Mobile ESPN is an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator), a "virtual carrier" that provides its own service on top of Sprint's physical network. Sprint Nextel today announced plans to expand and upgrade its existing Sprint Power Vision broadband network to EV-DO Revision A.
Up to 10 times faster than the current Power Vision network, the planned EV-DO Revision A technology upgrade increases peak download data rates to 3.1 Mbps (from 2.0) and peak upload data rates to 1.8 Mbps (from 144 kbps). Average download speeds improve to 450-800 kbps (from 400 -700) and average uplink speeds become 300 - 400 kbps (versus 70 - 144 kbps).

The Bluetooth wireless standard used in cell phones and other small devices will take a leap in transmission speed by incorporating a new radio technology known as ultra-wideband, or UWB.
Currently, Bluetooth works only for low-speed uses such as headsets and wireless keyboards, but UWB will broaden its scope to enable high-definition video and files for digital music players like the iPod.

Sprint Nextel today launched a local cell phone directory service to find information such as nearby restaurants, driving directions, and movie times.
The $2.99 a month service, called "Find It!," combines GPS (Global Positioning System) and directory information from InfoSpace to let users search out locations without having to enter a postal code or even know where they are. Samsung Electronics has developed a perfume spraying cell phone to release "smell tones" when incoming calls are received.
According to the recently filed patent application, controls are also available to adjust the type or amount of perfume sprayed. And when the perfume is used up, exchangeable cartridges can be reloaded.

Online payment company PayPal said it was preparing to offer a service for consumers to make purchases or money transfers through text messages via cell phones.
Known as PayPal Mobile, the service will be launched in the next couple of weeks in the United States, Canada and Britain. Over time, PayPal Mobile may extend to the more than 55 countries and regions where PayPal is registered to transfer funds online.

Cingular Wireless today announced it would begin offering ringtones of live performances from "American Idol" made within 24 hours of the show's broadcast.
Cingular customers will be able to buy ringtones of finalists' performances for $2.49 each. Ringtones will also be made during subsequent "American Idol" performance shows this season.

Nokia said today it will collaborate with Chinese language internet search provider Baidu.com on Chinese-speaking markets, including mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
