Samsung today announced plans to produce the world's first high-resolution active matrix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED) panel, using PenTile subpixel rendering technology from Clairvoyante.
By incorporating Clairvoyante's PenTile RGB technology, Samsung is able to develop the first handheld wVGA (480 x 800 px) OLED PenTile RGB panel, overcoming the manufacturing and performance challenges that have previously complicated high-resolution OLED production.

Google said today that it has bought Finnish startup Jaiku, maker of a mobile phone application where people can use to send short messages about where they are and what they're doing.
Terms of the acquisition weren't disclosed.
Google believes Jaiku's technology can help develop new ways to use mobile devices, according to a note posted Tuesday on Google's blog by Tony Hsieh, a product manager for the Mountain View-based company.

Verizon Wireless today announced the Samsung Gleam, a shiny thin clamshell with a new living wallpaper user interface.
The Gleam's exterior is a glossy metallic bronze and black and houses a sleek silver keypad. The new living wallpaper capability allows Verizon Wireless customers to easily see the phone's status with either a city or country view that changes with the time of day. AT&T today debuted the AT&T Tilt, a Windows Mobile 6 smartphone featuring a slide-out QWERTY keypad design, a 3.2-megapixel camera, 3G data speeds from AT&T's UMTS/HSDPA-based network.

Verizon Wireless today lifted the curtain on four anchor phones for the 2007 holiday season: the Samsung Juke, the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 smartphone, the LG Venus and the LG Voyager. All of the phones will be in stores before Thanksgiving.

Nokia said today it had agreed to buy US digital mapmaker Navteq for 8.1 billion dollars (5.7 billion euros), planning to offer many more mobile phones with integrated global positioning system (GPS) next year. Under the agreement, Nokia will pay $78 in cash for each Navteq share, including outstanding options.
