French luxury-goods company Christian Dior unveiled a line of mobile phones priced from $5,500 or $7,900 and up, driven by demand in new luxury markets such as China and Russia.

The government is quietly negotiating to help cell phone customers avoid expensive fees when they cancel contracts with wireless companies by capping cancellation fees for cell phones.
Cell phone carriers routinely charge customers $175 or more for ending their service early. T-Mobile today announced the May 28 availability of the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic phone, offering external music controls, stereo Bluetooth connectivity, wired stereo headsets, and USB cable for side-loading music.

Spurred by the popularity of Apple's iPhone and user interface, global shipments of touch-screen display modules are expected to more than double from 2008 to 2012, according to iSuppli.

Verizon Wireless is backing a free operating system that competes with programs from Microsoft, Google and Qualcomm and expects it to become the "preferred" software on its network.

LG and Samsung will collaborate on developing technology that they intend to propose for adoption as the mobile digital TV standard for the North American market.

Opera Software today announced its newest version the Opera Mini browser, up to 50 percent faster that prior version. Opera Mini 4.1 searchs for text within a webpage, provides URL entry with recognition based on bookmarks and browsing history, uploads and downloads files without going into the phone's native browser and downloads pages for offline viewing.

Sprint Nextel Corp., the No. 3 U.S. wireless service provider, said today it had a larger first-quarter deficit as revenue fell, it lost more than a million subscribers and it absorbed charges for severance and other costs.
Sprint said its total subscriber base fell by 1.09 million to 52.8 million, including the loss of 1.07 million post-paid customers who pay a monthly bill - actually smaller than the 1.2 million in post-paid losses the company had forecast last quarter.

Sprint and Google are partnering to bring services such as Google Maps for Mobile and YouTube to Sprint customers. As part of the deal, Google will also become Sprint's preferred mobile search provider.
