Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Ken Kutaragi has revealed plans of creating an accessory attachment to give cell phone and wireless functionality to its PlayStation Portable gaming system.
Stating plans for the adaptor were "in the near future," this development comes at no surprise. Largely speculated when Sony filed patent applications, the announcement confirms rumors that wireless add-ons were in planning. In addition to providing communication features, Sony's PlayStation Portable could download games via public Wi-Fi hot spots and swap content with the console version of the PlayStation. When Nokia released the N-Gage, the concept of integrating portable gaming devices with wireless communication seemed logical; providing multiplayer game play across the Internet. Unfortunately, the N-Gage never took off. Sony hopes to be more successful. Entering the portable game market last month in Japan, Sony has already sold over 800,000 units. Expected release in North America and Europe will be at the end of March this year.
