Motorola, a supporter of The European Commission's European Directive for Mobile Communication (E112) e-Call initiative, is showcasing how its technology can transmit important accident data - such as the exact location of the car - to authorities to help facilitate an emergency response.
Motorola is actively engaged in the e-Call initiative, which is focused on developing a standard, non-subscription based emergency call system for drivers across Europe. Motorola is the market leader in Telematics technology and has been shipping similar products to its automotive customers since 1996.
Motorola's emergency call system technology links directly with the vehicle's electrical system. In case of an accident, the system can be activated automatically via sensors. The system also can be activated manually. Motorola's system transmits information via a regular mobile communication network to an emergency call centre, which then alerts police and rescue services to the accident scene. Motorola's technology ensures that essential accident data is sent in parallel to the voice connection, which provides injured persons a direct connection to rescue services.
"Like the European Commission and its supporters, Motorola believes the e-Call initiative is of paramount importance and is committed to its development," said Marios Zenios, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Motorola's Automotive business. "Almost 40,000 fatalities, 3.3 million injuries and annual costs of roughly 180 billion Euro can be attributed to traffic accidents in Europe each year. With e-Call, we can try to reduce these statistics and save precious lives."
The European Commission initiative also is supported by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), an interest group of European automobile, bus and truck manufacturers, and ERTICO, a nonprofit organization promoting the implementation of intelligent transportation systems and service providers in Europe.
