In Delhi at the Indian Institute of Technology, students have created a wind-powered cell phone by attaching a turbine.
"The electricity generated by the turbine when moved by wind energy could charge a cell phone in an emergency. It generates electricity to the tune of 3 to 4 watts which is sufficient to charge a mobile phone," said Lalit Kumar Das, Head Professor of the Department of Industrial Design.
"The device will help mobile phone users charge their phones while traveling in a bus, a car or a train. All they need to do is place the turbine against the wind flow. It will use wind energy to move the turbine thereby generating energy."
The specialized turbine is small enough to be kept in a pocket, and costs as little as Rs. 200 ($4.50). Not limited to just phones, the engine attempts to extend mobile connectivity by providing energy where there is no electricity; electricity that could be used for radios, high intensity light devices (HILDs), or any low energy devices.
