South Korean cell phone manufacturer, LG Electronics, announced that it has successfully completed testing of its ultra-fast next-generation handsets on high-speed network provided by Canadian partner, Nortel Networks.
Running HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access), the new technology allows users to use visual communication, watch television in moving vehicles, and play high-resolution interactive games. Dubbed 3.5-generation mobile technology, real-world tests were completed in a moving automobile to demonstrate stability at speeds up to 1.4 Mbps.
The HSDPA service will eventually ensure data transmission at a speed of 14 Mbps, seven times faster than Qualcomm's EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) technology and five times faster than Europe's WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) network.
"LG Electronics is keen to develop early commercial handsets that are compatible with the HSDPA system, allowing us to lead the world's high-speed mobile phone market," LG Electronics president Park Moon-Hwa said in a statement.
Korean rival Samsung said it will plan to test-run its new HSDPA mobile handsets at CeBIT 2005, the world's biggest high-tech trade fair, from March 10-16 in Germany.
