Motorola will demonstrate during CeBIT 2005, the enhanced in-vehicle communications system that it designed, and that is currently available on 2005 BMW model year vehicles. Motorola has integrated Bluetooth wireless technology into the Communications Control Unit it supplies to BMW to provide drivers with a more convenient way to conduct hands-free calling. The pre-installed Communications Control Unit also supports the telematics service 'BMW Assist' and the internet portal 'BMW Online' in markets where these services are offered.
Convenient hands-free calling After a one-time pairing, the BMW hands-free system establishes a wireless link between the vehicle and a BMW approved mobile phone with Bluetooth wireless technology. The BMW communications system automatically connects to the phone and synchronizes phonebook contacts each time a driver enters the vehicle. Drivers are then able to conduct hands-free and wire-free calling, answer calls, browse contacts and place calls in a BMW by using the multi-function steering wheel, speech recognition to dial by name or number, or iDrive controls. All mobile phone calls are broadcast via the high-quality audio system inside the car.BMW Assist Safety and Convenience Services Motorola's Communications Control Unit also is the communications gateway that links BMW drivers to an array of emergency and roadside assistance services. While inside the car drivers have 24-hour-a-day access to emergency or roadside assistance at the touch of a button or automatically in the event of a serious accident. Motorola's Communications Control Unit is fully integrated into the vehicle's systems. In of the event of an accident, the system transmits location information to an emergency call center, which then alerts police and rescue services to the scene of an accident. Concierge and convenience services including directions, traffic information, weather forecast or reservations are also available to BMW owners while they are either inside or outside the car.
