Nokia Plans to Redesign N-Gage

Thu Mar 10, 2005 3:23 pm

Amid poor sales and increasing competition from rivals Sony and Nintendo, Nokia is continuing to work on new designs for its N-Gage video gaming cell phone. Cutting prices to spur sales growth in the US, the company has suffered slow sales amid strong criticism from the gaming community.

"We're looking at new colors, a new look and feel for the QD in the next few months," said Gerard Wiener, director and general manager of the games business program at Nokia.

Wiener also mentioned Nokia was planning to redesign the N-Gage for a future release, as the company attempts to fight strong veterans in the ever-saturating industry of mobile gaming.

Some of the changes planned include faster and better wireless networks. Much of the N-Gage's strengths are in its GSM wireless networking platform. However in the States, CDMA dominates.

"There's no question addressing the CDMA market is something we'd like to be doing," Wiener said, but "The jury is still out."

"I think the breadth and scope of our retail offer was not what it needed to be to gain traction, especially in the United States." In future, he said, Nokia would work for tighter sales integration with the carriers. "The timing is right for us to be pushing a little harder on the operator channel."

this has been a discussion point even as the QD was released. I think the sooner Nokia release an new N-gage the better, to keep interest for the console up as newer portable console are being released.

Anewer handset which really uses it GSM advantage is the key i think.

Nokia is taking on a losing cause. The N-Gage was a bomb, and the QD never took off. With the Sony and Nintendo coming out with portable gaming devices, I don't see how a newbie like Nokia can ever win in the gaming industry. Stick to cell phones and leave gaming to the big boys.

I think it't good that nokia are re designing the ngage because it was so boring and rubbish. I really doubt its gonna do well though because there'll be loads of competition from the nintendo ds and people are starting to get sick of stupid nokia.

i dont know about you guys, but i like the n-gage qd. nokia did a huge improvement by redesigning the QD to get rid of the ridiculous "taco ear" talking design.

and i'm sure they'll get it even better this time around.

but i think if they come up with a great design, they might make people think twice.

besides it is not really in direct competition with the psp and ds, as it offers more than just gaming and is aimed at a different target market surely?

I like the QD and I'm not surprised about the redesign plans cause Nokia is pretty reactive, and in the ever changing dog eat dog world of gaming and mobiles we always want more novelty more regularly icon_alien.gif

i too like my qd, and hope that the redesigned n-gage helps them out in the popularity stakes, and therefore brings more users to the unit and thus the arena!!!!

definitely, I liked the look of the original, it had more soul, but the QD wad more practial hoping that the ngage 3 will secure nokia a broader niche with gamers !!
