According to research conducted at Melbourne's Monash University, people who can't live without their cell phones are likely to be extroverts or have low self-esteem.
The survey, which studied 195 people over the age of 18, determined personality can be largely deduced by how they used their phones; based on phone bill size, reasons for calls, and aches and pains linked to use, such as sore thumbs from text messaging.
Lead by James Philips, researchers asked if family and friends complained about their phone use, if their schedules were affected by late arrivals, and if they were easily annoyed when someone asked them to turn off their phone.
Psychological tests were also administered which according to Philips, showed a clear correlation between personality type and phone use.
"Those with poor self-esteem are more likely to seek reassurance using their phones or they are unhappy and using their phones to reach out to others. While the extroverts tend to be using them more to make social arrangements with a large network of friends," Philips added.
