Symantec Releases Free Antivirus Software for Symbian Phones

Symantec has announced a beta release free for download to protect Symbian devices from mobile viruses. As an integrated security solution that combines antivirus and firewall protection, Symantec Mobile Security comes at a much needed time with the increasing spread of the MMS-transmitted CommWarrior and Bluetooth-based Cabir viruses.
Symantec Mobile Security provides secure mobile computing through comprehensive, reliable protection against malicious attacks directed at devices. Specifically designed to work with mobile device management systems, administrators can use wireless connections to send installation and configuration files to users' devices to maintain protection.
Devices can be configured remotely by the administrator to pick up virus definitions and product updates either directly from the Symantec LiveUpdate servers (through a wireless Internet connection), or from an internal network.
Symantec Mobile Security supports the Symbian Series 60 and Series 80 platforms, including devices such as:
- Nokia 6260
- Nokia 6600
- Nokia 6620
- Nokia 6630
- Nokia 6670
- Nokia 7610
- Nokia 9300
- Nokia 9500
The beta release can be downloaded from Symantec at https://www-secure.symantec.com/public_beta .

Thanks for the tip. Installed and works like a charm. I got hit with the Bluetooth virus and it kept draining my battery until it wouldn't last a day on standby.
I almost sent it in to be fixed before a friend said it might be a virus.

Doing a bit of research on the available antivirus programs, and it seems that the high profile companies such as McAfee and Symantec are selling products that are no better than the free programs available.

How can you justify your research? Have you tried it on viruses to see if they really catch them? What about the features that are offered by the big players compared to the free ones?

There really isn't a way around the trialware or beta, because security software is based upon a service. You are not paying for the application, but the service they supply (ie Monthly Virus Definitions, Content Filtering URL Links, etc...)
So for instance, Symantec has both AntiVirus and Firewall. Since the firewall only blocks internet packets and not content filtering, then you are only paying for the virus definition subscriptions.
Just about all the AntiVirus solutions I have seen are the same price per year... give or take a dollar. So, it's basically down to the features you want in the software. And after reading this article, you can say that the Symantec firewall for s60 is a bonus feature.
Also, if you do get free or discounted antivirus, how effective will their scan engine be compared to a company dedicated to the security research? Knowing what virus threats that may emerge and tailoring their software on-the-fly? An example would be "Do I want my house secured by Bob's Security or Brinks?"

If it's anything like the computer space, free anti virus software usually work fine, and the big commercial anti virus are always so bloated and use so much system resource. I hope the cell phone ones won't turn out that way.

Folks, there are almost no mobile viruses.
Check MobileVirusRadar for a list of risks by device.
