Sprint has released an update to its popular palmOne Treo 650 smartphone. The Treo 650 Updater features performance and reliability enhancements for the smartphone including:
- Overall voice quality improvements, including fix for voice "choppiness" some Sprint PCS customers experienced
- Internal setting modification to allow correct access to Sprint Affiliate roaming partner networks (previously released as Sprint PCS Treo 650 Roaming Patch)
- Non-Volatile File System improvements that optimize memory handling and free up more memory
- TTY (also known as TDD or Text Telephone) optimizations and improvements
- Optimizations for data calls
- Includes VersaMail 3.0c which provides greater stability and improvements
- Bluetooth Carkit drivers are now included in ROM (previously released as Carkit Update for Treo 650)
The Treo 650 Updater 1.08 will change the permanent (ROM) software in the Treo smartphone, and takes about 30 minutes to complete the process. During the upgrade:
1. The Treo 650's user name is identified
2. The user's personal data is backed up on your PC or Mac
3. The updater is installed on the smartphone
4. The ROM updater runs automatically on the smartphone
5. All personal data and applications are erased from the smartphone
6. The ROM software is upgraded
7. A second HotSync operation restores the personal data and applications that were backed up earlier
Performing the update will erase all data on the Treo 650 smartphone and revert it to a factory state.
Finally. The upgrade fixes the major memory leak problem. It couldn't hold as many applications and files as they expected; storing the minimum file sizes in 512 bytes. Meaning a 14-byte entry will take up a full 512 bytes of the Treo 650's memory.
If you use your Treo to store small files (like entries in a scheduler), it'll fill up fast. Upgrade now and save yourself the headache.
