Cingular and HP Launch the iPAQ Pocket PC

Mon Jun 06, 2005 4:06 pm

Cingular Wireless and HP today introduced the first integrated voice and data HP iPAQ Pocket PC to be powered by Cingular's nationwide digital wireless network.

The Cingular-enabled HP iPAQ Pocket PC h6320 / 6325, which comes with the Windows Mobile software, incorporates GSM quad-band "world phone" capabilities to give users a wide-reaching international experience.

The HP iPAQ h6320 / 6325 features three-way wireless capabilities via Cingular's nationwide GSM / GPRS network, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology. Providing manageable, more secure access to corporate data, e-mail, and the Internet, the HP iPAQ h6320 / 6325 includes an innovative feature that automatically connects to the fastest available network and automatically switches to an alternate network if the initial connection is lost.

The HP iPAQ h6320 / 6325's international capabilities feature gives mobile professionals the ability to use its voice and data features within the United States or abroad. Cingular roaming agreements give customers the ability to use their device in 160 countries when making phone calls and over 80 countries when accessing data. It is available beginning today online at http://www.hp.com/go/iPAQs/h6320_h6325 and through various HP and Cingular sales channels.

"The iPAQ h6320 / 6325 teams HP's popular Pocket PC technology with connectivity to the largest wireless digital voice and data network in the U.S. and extensive international roaming to give users a truly world-class wireless experience," said Abhi Ingle, executive director, business data solutions, for Cingular Wireless. "It is a valuable tool not only for mobile professionals but for government agencies and companies with technicians in the field and outside sales forces, as well as those in the healthcare, high-tech and manufacturing industries, for example."

Cingular's portfolio of applications certified for Pocket PC devices includes those from leading software vendors Antenna Software, Epocrates, Extended Systems, and TEPR 2005 award winner PatientKeeper.

The HP iPAQ h6320 / 6325 is part of the HP iPAQ Pocket PC h6300 series, which features enhancements to wireless security and roaming functionality, Bluetooth Connection Manager, and audio for Bluetooth and wired headsets to provide Cingular customers with an excellent end-user experience. It is a small and sleek handheld with a bright, 3.5-inch color screen and a removable, snap-on thumb keyboard. The HP iPAQ h6325 includes a built-in VGA camera with 640 x 480 pixel resolution and 8-bit color.

The HP iPAQ h6320 / 6325 also delivers e-mail and messaging capabilities. When matched with Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server, e-mail, attachments, calendar updates and more can be automatically sent and synched with the
device over a Wi-Fi or GPRS network.

The device's integrated Bluetooth technology gives users wireless connectivity to such peripherals as headsets, printers and desktop or notebook PCs. The 3.5-inch screen combines transflective display technology with more than 65,000 brilliant colors, and a high-contrast ratio with rich color saturation to provide crisper, clearer images and text.

"HP welcomes the chance to be part of the Cingular family and looks forward to delivering Cingular customers a range of convenient options to stay connected," said Rick Roesler, vice president, handheld division, HP. "Our versatile HP iPAQ h6320 / 6325 provides customers with a high-quality voice and data experience to maintain productivity virtually anywhere they go."

The HP iPAQ h6320 / 6325 is powered by a Texas Instruments OMAP 1510 processor and has SDRAM 64-MB, 64-MB ROM memory (55-MB user accessible) bolstered by up to 20 MB iPAQ File Store featuring non-volatile memory used to store critical data, databases and other important files. An integrated Secure Digital (SD) slot supports SD and Multimedia Card memory cards.

The HP iPAQ h6320 / 6325 comes with Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition software for Pocket PC, which gives users access to pocket versions of Outlook, Word, Excel and Internet Explorer. It also supports the Microsoft Windows .NET Compact Framework so that IT investments already made in .NET applications can be easily leveraged and extended to mobile users.

"The HP iPAQ h6320 / 6325 Pocket PC phone, combined with Cingular's nationwide network, is a great solution for individuals and companies looking to improve the productivity through access to critical information remotely," said Scott Horn, senior director for the Mobile and Embedded Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. "We are excited HP and Cingular are taking advantage of the Windows Mobile software platform to deliver devices with familiar interface and applications to their customers."

Praised for its many advanced features and wireless connectivity options, the HP iPAQ h6300 series has been widely recognized with superior reviews and significant industry accolades since its introduction. A few among these include: Popular Science's "Best of What's New" award in December 2004 and winner of "Best of Show 2004" at TechXNY in the Best Mobile / Wireless solution category.
