Dell to Sell Laptops with Verizon's EV-DO High-Speed Data

Mon Sep 19, 2005 12:58 pm

Dell and Verizon Wireless have teamed to lead the evolving convergence of computing and communications devices. This collaboration allows Dell customers to purchase and activate the Verizon Wireless V620 PC Card directly from Dell.

U.S. mobile customers will now be able to access the Internet, e-mail and critical data on their Dell notebooks using Verizon Wireless' Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) broadband network, the nation's largest high-speed wireless broadband network. Dell collaborated with Verizon Wireless to test and validate the V620 on Inspiron and Latitude notebooks, ensuring that customers can expect maximum performance, connectivity, and convenience.

In addition, the companies will continue to drive new wireless initiatives, including the integration of mobile broadband capabilities into Dell notebook computers beginning next year.

"The rapid growth in mobile computing has been fueled by wireless networking and access to critical information on the go," said Alex Gruzen, senior vice president in Dell's Product Group. "Dell has been the leader in driving wireless integration into our notebook products and we intend to accelerate our mobile computing business by enabling wireless broadband across our product line. The Dell direct model is uniquely capable of putting the technology and wireless service in customers' hands. Before long, it will be a basic assumption that one can access critical information anytime, anywhere, with the speed and rich content that we have all come to expect. Dell's market-leading notebooks will be at the forefront of that trend."

"This agreement blends the technology of two companies that define innovation," said John Stratton, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. "Together we are giving customers the speed and breadth of the Verizon Wireless EV-DO network and the latest mobile computing technology from Dell. Convenience, service and technology that can bring about immediate returns on a company's investment are what make this agreement significant."

The V620 PC Card supports EV-DO network technology, providing average speeds of 400-700 kilobits per second, access to e-mail, intranet, corporate applications and full Web browsing. Whether riding in a taxi, waiting in an airport or at the office, Dell notebook users with the V620 PC Card will be able to quickly access complex files and view e-mail attachments. Verizon Wireless is the leader in wireless broadband deployment and currently offers BroadbandAccess service in more than 60 major metropolitan areas and airports nationwide, covering more than 140 million people.

Edward Don & Company, a leading distributor of food service equipment and supplies, is also a leader in sales force automation. Over the last three years, 350 account representatives across the country have been using Dell Latitude notebooks and Verizon Wireless PC cards helping to increase productivity and efficiency in a truly mobile and remote workforce.

"This technology enables our sales force to work in an office-like environment wherever they are," said Jim Lyman, vice president, e-commerce and customer connections, Edward Don & Company. "Customers and sales representatives benefit from having the ability to write orders, access product information and inventory availability, and write quotes in real time."
