Sprint and MSpot Roll Out Streaming Movie Service

Tue Dec 13, 2005 1:24 pm

Sprint and MSpot, a pioneer in premium mobile entertainment, today announced the premier of MSpot Movies, the first mobile entertainment service to stream full-length feature films to mobile phones. Available exclusively on the Nationwide Sprint PCS Network, MSpot Movies gives subscribers on-demand access to seven movie genres, including a wide range of titles that MSpot makes available in "chapters," short segments optimized for a mobile audience. In addition, MSpot Movies includes TV shows, music concerts and stand-up comedy specials.

Mobile video services are rapidly gaining popularity as mobile phone technology becomes more advanced. Strategy Analytics estimates that more than 150 million people worldwide will be watching video on their mobile phones by 2008. MSpot is a pioneer in mobile multimedia entertainment, and has been at the forefront of the industry since it launched one of the first mobile radio services in March 2005. Sprint won an Emmy Award for being the first to bring TV service to the mobile phone.

"The entertainment industry is still very much in an experimental phase when it comes to music and video services for mobile phones. The medium is so new - and holds so much promise - that studios, music labels and media companies are scrambling to figure out the best approach and the most effective business models," said Daren Tsui, CEO and co-founder of MSpot. "MSpot is one of the few mobile multimedia experts, and we've designed MSpot Movies based on what we've learned about tailoring content for mobile audiences. We believe that MSpot Movies is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what is to come in the mobile entertainment era."

Geared towards cinema buffs of all ages, MSpot Movies brings the magic of the silver screen to mobile phones. Sprint customers have unlimited access to a wide variety of comedy, horror, drama, adventure and animated films. MSpot will add new titles to the service on a weekly basis, enabling subscribers to watch all of the individual "chapters" of an entire movie at any time. Each chapter averages five minutes in duration. MSpot Movies is available for $6.95 per month and includes:

- Seven Different Genres of Streaming Movies - MSpot Movies has something for the whole family with popular movies as "Three Stooges," "Night of the Living Dead" and "Short Circuit." Genres include: Comedy, Drama, Horror, Adventure, Westerns, Animated Features, and Movie Shorts.

- TV Shows - In addition to a wide variety of movie content, MSpot Movies also features TV shows from the past such "Hearts Afire," "Conan the Adventurer," and "Starhunter 2300."

- Music Concerts - MSpot Movies features music concerts from today's hottest artists including The Roots, My Chemical Romance, Young Gunz and The Used.

"Sprint believes MSpot Movies will be very popular with our customers, allowing them to watch some of their favorite movies whenever and wherever they go," said Dale Knoop, general manager of multimedia services for Sprint. "Offering the industry's first full-length streaming movie service demonstrates our continued leadership and commitment to bringing the best entertainment services to our customers."

MSpot Movies is MSpot's third subscription service offering, joining MSpot Radio and MSpot Music on the Nationwide Sprint PCS Network. MSpot plans to roll out other multimedia entertainment services in the next year.
