The Bluetooth wireless standard used in cell phones and other small devices will take a leap in transmission speed by incorporating a new radio technology known as ultra-wideband, or UWB.
Currently, Bluetooth works only for low-speed uses such as headsets and wireless keyboards, but UWB will broaden its scope to enable high-definition video and files for digital music players like the iPod.Ideal for high-quality video and audio applications for portable devices, multi-media projectors, and television sets, UWB will allow wireless transmissions at speeds equivalent to USB or FireWire cables at distances up to 10 feet. Bluetooth technology will also continue to cater to the needs of low powered applications such as mice, keyboards and mono headsets. The first products with high-speed Bluetooth may show up in Q2 2007, with wider availability in 2008.
