|
|
Mon May 22, 2006 10:57 am
Verizon Wireless today announced that the highly anticipated Motorola Q will be available online starting May 31 and in stores on June 5.
Ideal for customers who multi-task and want flexibility, the Motorola Q's style is built upon the ultra-thin design created by the RAZR. The Q - which runs Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 software - combines the powerful enterprise connectivity with entertainment in a thin and stylish form factor. Utilizing Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess network, customers can send and receive data at broadband rates.
The Motorola Q offers a portfolio of entertainment capabilities ranging from stereo music and video playback to Web browsing and instant messaging. With a bright color screen, wireless broadband capabilities, and a full media experience with Windows Media Player Mobile, the Motorola Q offers robust entertainment capabilities.
Optimized for a variety of corporate and personal email technologies, the Q's form factor and QWERTY keyboard let customers easily create and manage corporate and personal email. The addition of Wireless Sync from Verizon Wireless helps make life on-the-go easier and more productive. With always-on email, users can stay connected and get the job done while away from the office - without a delay and in a secure environment.
With Windows Mobile software, the Q also offers corporate mobile messaging support out of the box with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. For additional wireless access to Exchange and other servers, Good Technologies is offering an optimized version of its Good Link email solution. The Q also offers easy access to personal email based on POP3, web mail and Hotmail.
Features of the Motorola Q from Verizon Wireless include:
- Integrated Bluetooth 1.2 wireless technology for communicating with compatible headsets, car kits and certain other devices equipped with Bluetooth technology
- EV-DO access for fast downloads of data, email and large attachments
- Wireless Sync for anytime connectivity with e-mail, calendar and contacts synchronization
- Thinnest QWERTY device in the world - 11.5mm includes a familiar thumbwheel to enhance the navigation experience
- Seamless access to corporate applications, messaging, organizational tools and IT support, from across the campus and around the world
- Synchronization with e-mail, calendar, contacts, and tasks entries, regardless of platform or ISP
- Integrated with Windows Mobile 5.0 software for the convenience of users and IT with access to Yahoo!, Hotmail and other POP3
- All standard desktop document views supported including: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, etc.
- Supports audio and video formats
- Dual, stereo-quality speakers
- Easy integration with existing IT systems for enhanced IT support
- Enabled for leading corporate e-mail solutions
- Flexibility enables loading of standard corporate VPN
- Password authentication helps ensure network integrity
The Motorola Q is available exclusively through Verizon Wireless. Customers may purchase the Motorola Q for $199.99 after a $100 instant credit when purchased with a qualified Verizon Wireless voice and data plan and two-year customer agreement.

Actually that's $300 with a $100 instant rebate. Whether its contingent upon a data plan is another factor. From what I read they're not that cheap.
Still, better then expected.

It should be noted that the Q isn't a PDA, but rather a smartphone... hence the low pricing.

I'm pretty exciting to see the Q. The press has been calling it the 'BlackBerry Killer.' While I think that may be a bit extreme, it does have the aesthetic appeal over RIM's devices. The only thing is to see if it can go head to head with them on email and functionality.

Ok .... I'm uneducated. What is the difference between a Smartphone and a PDA? What is the Q lacking that comes with/on something like the Treo's? (reading booboy's message)

The main difference between Smartphones and PDAs all comes down to functionality.
If you just need to view calendar, contacts, tasks, and email then a SmartPhone will be fine. But if you need to perform a significant amount of data entry, read or write Word or Excel files, and more than one email account, then a PDA would be better.

If you guys would google "Motorola Q" you'd get a whole lot more product information instead of relying on the gossip and rumors you find in these forums.
Verizon has exclusive rights to debut the product. Sprint will get a version shortly down the road and a GSM version will be out the end of the year, so look for it at Cingular sometime tentatively first of 07 (possibly in time for Xmas 06)

Can anyone tell me the difference between:
NationalAccess & Enhanced Services
and
BroadbandAccess & VCAST
??
What are the capabilities with each one?

BroadbandAccess = EV-DO (broadband speeds) = typical speeds of 400-700 kbps, capable of bursts up to 2 Mbps
NationalAccess = cdma2000 (modem speeds) = typical speeds of 60 to 80 kbps, capable of bursts up to 144 kbps
Almost 10x the difference.

Thanks PunkRock ... not good news for me. I'm in Florida and looking at the coverage map for BroadbandAccess the only service is in the greater Orlando, Tampa and Miami/Lauderdale area. I'm no where close to any of those metropolitan areas. Oh well.
