Carnival Cruise Lines announced plans to add cell phone service to appeal to people who don't want to lose touch with work and family while away on vacation.
The service will be available on all of Carnival's 21 ships by early next year as part of a deal with Wireless Maritime Services, a joint venture of Cingular Wireless and Maritime Telecommunications Network. Only one Carnival ship, the Triumph, currently offers the service.Utilizing WMS' high-bandwidth technology, the service is compatible with any cell phone and allows guests to make and receive calls anywhere in the world from any cruising region. The new cell phone service requires no additional software or special dialing procedures - guests simply make and receive calls as well as transmit text and multimedia messages as they would on land using their personal cell phone. International roaming fees apply to all shipboard cell phone calls. Carnival is the latest cruise line to offer the service. Wireless Maritime Services has deals with eight cruise lines covering 32 ships, including the entire Norwegian Cruise Line fleet. Royal Caribbean International plans to provide the service on all 20 ships by the year's end.
