Motorola Sells 50 Millionth RAZR

Tue Jul 18, 2006 9:57 am
Motorola announced a major milestone today with the shipment of the 50 millionth Motorola RAZR V3 handset.
To celebrate the 50-millionth-unit milestone, Motorola and U.S. Cellular are hosting a series of exciting events at the U.S. Cellular store located at 30 North La Salle Street in downtown Chicago.
Consumers who visit the store can get a chance to win a variety of prizes, including a free Motorola RAZR. Every 50 seconds this morning between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Central Time, the U.S. Cellular store at 30 North LaSalle Street will give away a Motorola RAZR.
History in the Making
The Motorola RAZR launched on the global stage in Hong Kong, and made its U.S. debut with Cingular Wireless. Creating a sensation among consumers, in the fourth quarter of 2004, Motorola posted an industry-leading performance in handset sales up 42 percent versus fourth-quarter 2003 shipments. And in its second quarter 2005 sales, the Motorola RAZR V3 had sold more than five million units globally, a record that was topped in the third quarter of 2005 with sales of over 12 million units globally. By achieving the 50-million-unit milestone today, the Motorola RAZR has claimed its place as a global cultural design icon.
As the "must-have" in mobile communication, the Motorola RAZR has appeared in the hands of celebrities and on the pages of every fashion magazine since its launch in November of 2004. Riding on the success of the RAZR in Silver, Motorola introduced the special-edition RAZR in Black at the 77th Annual Academy Awards in early 2005.
In September 2005, the iconic mobile was created in hot pink - being seen in the hands of Hollywood's "it" girls, including tennis pro Maria Sharapova. In November 2005, consumers were able to purchase the Motorola RAZR Magenta at T-Mobile. By February 2006, two other varieties of pink were offered at Cingular Wireless (Pink RAZR) and Verizon Wireless (Pink RAZR V3c) stores across the U.S.
Recently, the Motorola RAZR has continued its course as a fashion-forward mobile device via the new Motorola RAZR V3i Dolce & Gabbana edition. Motorola has teamed with high-end fashion designers, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana to dress-up the V3i with a spectacular gold and silver finish and engraved it with the signature Dolce & Gabbana logo.
Noted by industry experts as a game-changing feat of design and engineering, the Motorola RAZR measures just 13.9mm thin. The mobile handset's radical and revolutionary design transformed consumers' expectations for how a mobile handset should look and feel.

At the time of their release the razrs were something to talk about, but now we see that its just another cellphone, altougth the design is awsome, the features are lacking. But for those who are'nt phone freaks dont see that which is why i think they were able to sell so many.

Funny thing is 50 million RAZRs is still nothing to the StarTacs Moto sold in the 90s

I think the razor is all that an a bag a chips, but the above person is write, to little features, and the phone feels pretty cheap, plus the limit to accessories, like proper headphones, makes it a dieing breed.
Moto better hurry up and put a live video call streaming camera in it, or their going to be left in the dust. Still go moto, they rock hard.

I think it could use an FM radio, an mp3 player, and the ability to add addresses to the contacts.
I wish mine had the megapixel camer instead of the VGA.

That's what I mean. They should at least keep pace with Nokia's features. It seems like it would be easy to add. I used to use it all the time on my Nokia.
My Nokia 3200 had a flashlight that I used to use ALL THE TIME, but the power buttons on those phones seems to be cheap. I had 2 phones where the power switches broke.

simple.
moto = cheap insides, flashy outside
nokia = great inside, boring outside
from a business perspective its briliant. most people don't know the difference between bluetooth and infrared. all they want is a cheap phone that looks good. that's why the razrs are so popular. if someone's looking at a showcase of phones, which do you think the average consumer is going to buy? what looks like a boring phone for $300 or the razr for free?

I see it all day long where I work. This is why the United States is probably a year behind in the cellular business world. Americans buy cheap and free.

My RAZR is the first Moto that I have owned because my wife is Finnish, and I think it is beyond solid. Other than a few software annoyances and limitations the phone is great.
Most of the free phones have been the crappy flip phones with no outside display or the old Nokia flat phones.
