Mon Jan 08, 2007 3:30 pm

Cingular Wireless today announced the Treo 750, the first Palm Treo smart device running on Cingular's 3G / UMTS network. The highly anticipated Treo 750 five-band world phone running Windows Mobile 5.0 with Direct Push Technology offers Palm's exclusive usability improvements with powerful business features, including email, security, and web access on the go.

The Treo 750 combines the Palm experience of a multifunction mobile phone with email, messaging, web browsing, organization software and a robust application portfolio with Cingular's next-generation 3G network. Its new compact design features an internal antenna, soft-touch finish, and contoured edges to make it comfortable in the hand. The Treo 750 also has a full QWERTY keyboard for easy messaging, a 1.3-megapixel camera, a bright 240 x 240 px touch screen and support for Bluetooth stereo headsets. The built-in 60 MB of user-available storage can be enhanced by using the miniSD slot to add memory cards of up to 2 GB, which are great for storing data, photos, music and video.

In addition to delivering a phone with easy one-handed access to key features, Palm offers a unique suite of software enhancements to Windows Mobile, including the following:
- New messaging application, with the highly requested threaded chat view for text and MMS messages
- Today Screen enhancements, which feature the ability to "dial by name" with a few keystrokes on the keyboard, perform a web search directly from the Today Screen and perform one-touch dialing with personalized photo speed dials
- Ability to manage a call directly from the Today Screen and stay on top of voicemail with on-screen, VCR-like icons, such as rewind, delete and fast-forward controls for easy navigation
- Capability to ignore a call and quickly send a text message such as "In a meeting" or "Can't talk right now" by selecting the "Ignore with text" option from the incoming call screen

With Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition, users get a desktoplike experience on their Treo 750, including access to mobile versions of Windows Media Player 10, Internet Explorer, and Outlook applications in addition to the ability to view and edit Microsoft Word and Excel files and view PowerPoint and PDF files.

The Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) is available out of the box with the Treo 750 and includes Direct Push Technology, which gives users connected to a Microsoft Exchange Server fast, automatic wireless updates of their email, calendar items, contacts and tasks. It provides added security features for IT administrators, such as over-the-air password policy enforcement and remote wipe for lost or stolen devices. MSFP also gives users over-the-air lookup of a company's Global Address List (GAL), providing employees with quick access to colleagues' email and contact information.

The Treo 750 offers mobile professionals other corporate email options, including streamlined access to Microsoft Exchange or Domino / Notes using Good Mobile Messaging or personal email with Cingular Xpress Mail.

Cingular's UMTS-based technology natively supports simultaneous voice and data, allowing users to download email or browse the web while making a phone call or checking voicemail. Cingular's 3G service is available currently in more than 160 major metropolitan areas. Outside of Cingular's 3G coverage area, users can seamlessly connect with Cingular's nationwide EDGE wireless data network.

The Palm Treo 750 initially will be enabled for UMTS with a free upgrade, scheduled to be available later in 2007, to Cingular's supercharged HSDPA technology. UMTS / HSDPA is a global standard and natural 3G evolutionary path for GSM providers with 142 UMTS networks in 61 countries currently available.

The Treo 750 will be available Jan. 8 for consumers and businesses at Cingular Wireless retail stores, online and through Cingular's B2B sales organization. It will be available for $399.99 with a two-year contract and mail-in rebate. A variety of monthly data plans will be available, including unlimited plans starting as low as $39.99/month.

Ok a palm with Windows!!! Horay or maybe what are the people in Palm thinking.. they want take the windows mobile market by storm. But who wants it? Just to have a subpar device not because the manufacturer Palm but a bug infested device that the verizon and sprint predecesor are already having... So Bold Move of cingular having the palm 680 just in case!!! You know for the traditional users!!!!

Okay, where to start? Naturally, a phone will have it's shortcomings. Unfortunately, the Treo 750 has many more than the previous models, issues primarily resting with the move to Windows Mobile.

Primary Issues:
Active memory hogging (phone is slow)
Apps do NOT exit- they have to be killed from the Memory program (located in Settings>System)
Loss of screen resolution highly apparent. The move from 320x240 to 240x240 was not a good one.
Battery life (phone on) is generally less than 24 hours on standby. After this time, I hedge no bets the phone will die mid-conversation.
If you had a MiniSD card in your previous Treo, you need to get a MicroSD.
New Sync cable latches into the bottom of the phone too well. Unfortunately, PalmOne doesn't provide a detach mechanism, you have to forcefully pull the connector off the phone. I foresee a short connector life.
IR port relocated to the right side of the phone. Come'on, who wants to try beaming information across the room with the phone sideways?

Primary Positives:
It's a Windows OS, a plus yes even for its numerous bugs.
No antenna stub, doesn't get caught on things in your pocket.
The ActiveSync program is vastly more stable than Hotsync. Also, you don't have to push that button on the cradle anymore. Just drop 'n sync.
Keyboard has a tighter feel than the earlier models. I like it because it's harder to fatfinger buttons.

Overall, I would give the new Treo 750 a 4/10, primarily for it's bugs and the other feature changes that are less useful. I personally think that if they turn out an 800 they will heed their customers and fix the problems given their good track record with these phones.

I find the treo to be an excellent phone. I previously had a cingular 8125, which learned to swim at an early age, and this is leeps and bounds ahead of the cingular first in proc speed by 50 percent, it also is far easier to use one handed, and it is 3g. after installing the hspda hack I now get 1000 kilobits/ps.

nice.

after installing the hspda hack I now get 1000 kilobits/ps.

What exactly does that hack consist of and how does it work?

6. Posted by zach0624 Mon May 07, 2007 5:55 pm

I don't support this hack (don't blame me if it doesn't work)but google treo 750 hsdpa hack and select a site to download it from. then sync your treo and install it through active sync. now do two soft resets and you should be up and running. this hack only effects speed in umts areas. after doing the soft resets you should get get atleast 600 kilobits not kilobytes and up to 1 megabit per second bursts. this probably effects the rom so install at own risk. the official update I believe will come with wm6 in june or july

I have a problem with the date format in excel mobile. If I type 06-10-07 it returns June 10, 2007 but I want to get October 6, 2007. In Mexico we use dd/mm/yy format to dates.

I also changed the regional settings in windows mobile, but when shyncronizing to my desktop, some functions doesn´t work well. the cells changed date to mm/dd/yy. żAny help?
