Does anyone have this phone? Any comments on it's performance?

I'm looking for a phone that is thin (I currently have the Samsung A930 and it's too bulky, but I like it's features)

I would also like a phone that easy to text.

I like the thinness of the Krzr.

Was looking at smart phones for easy texting, but I like to have a small, thin phone, so the U740 looks promising.

I don't particularly like the clock face display on the phone. Can this be changed to digital?

Can anyone tell me if I will be able to use this phone in Europe?

4. Posted by teggiesmalls Thu Feb 22, 2007 10:49 am

I have this phone and it has already come in very handy.

Yes, the clock can be changed to digital, I did it the second I was out of the store.

The only down fall that I am seeing to this phone is that the number keys are very small. sometimes its hard to hit them exactly and you have to delete and go back.

Other than that it has awesome volume on incoming call rings and also in the earpiece. Unlike some other phones.

All in all, a good phone

5. Posted by Bustertb Thu Feb 22, 2007 11:00 am

teggiesmalls, thanks for the feedback.

If you don't mind, could you tell me

1. How much you paid for the phone?

2. Have you taken any pics/video with it?

3. Do you use a bluetooth headset? I have a Moto H700.

4. Does it have good reception?

5. How does the speaker phone sound?

6. Does it feel sturdy? Does the hinge seem like it will wear well going from vertical to horizontal?

Thanks!

I have been trying to find out if this phone will work with any of the google applications such as:

Gmail
maps

I have not had any luck with the LG phones,

I have this phone, i purchased it last saturday and it is so awesome! i love it and i would recommend it to anyone! it had a neat new thing that i have never seen on any other phone, for text messaging you can tell it what to say and it will type it in for you. I was kind of scared because it is gold and i wasnt sure if i would like it but it has grown on me. i have been waiting on this phone to come out since november and i am so glad its finally out! The service is amazing and everyone is amazed at how cool it is. I love it!

8. Posted by Got2HaveFaith Fri Mar 02, 2007 4:59 pm

What color is it?is it like that cream color or is it just a different color in real life?

9. Posted by gbenton Fri Mar 02, 2007 11:12 pm

10. Posted by pragnesh163 Tue Mar 06, 2007 5:18 pm

yes i have SCH u-740 i have paid $149 after rebate.
The camera quality is better but not the best.
Reception is excellant.
Speaker phone is working just fine.
I would rank this phone 8.5/10
i like it! icon_biggrin.gif

Those who have this phone, what do you think of the screen's resolution?

12. Posted by TheSultan Sat Mar 10, 2007 7:04 am

I saw this phone in the store. I must agree, everything is awesome about this phone except the LAME gold color.

13. Posted by hossakabrandon Sun Mar 11, 2007 10:00 am

I bought this phone last week and it does play .mp3 files. I avoided buying the expensive music care package and bought the microSD card and converter drive for under $40. I just put the .mp3's on the card with WMP and insert it in the phone and it worked.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a better file type to use on cell phones, b/c the immense base of the songs distorts the quality. Any suggestions?

14. Posted by HarleysDodge Mon Mar 12, 2007 9:49 pm

The phone does support mp3.

15. Posted by paperstreet Tue Mar 20, 2007 8:24 pm

The phone doesn't have global capabilities, so no GSM or SIM card, no travel outside of the U.S. pretty much. There are a couple CDMA switches in countries here and there. I still feel that this phone is a slimmer version of the LG V. The camera could've used at least the 2.0 mp, as 1.3mp is now as standard as 512 mb ram on a laptop. I hope to see an upgraded version of this Q1 of 08

16. Posted by LupinIII Sun Apr 01, 2007 1:02 am

well i have had this phone for a while got it right away paid full retail

heres the big questions. no Gmails java based app will not work with this phone but the web interface works nicely same for any java based google app. it does play mp3 files quite nicely however you cannot use them as ringtones at least i have not figured them out. camera quality is great for a cell phone also has a LED flash which is cool considering. small light and thin decent battery life music quality is superb but no EQ downfalls of this phone the number key is rough to use in landscape youll get used to it but it would be better if they had a dedicated landscape number pad. also the P key is harder to hit then the rest ive done alot of texting its not a big deal just something you should note. try hitting it on the floor model at the store its a little bit of plastic that gets slightly in the way. also color of the phone personaly i like the champaign color but some may hate it also no dedicated camera button on the side nice touch sensitive buttons on front for music player. for texters its a great phone thats why i got a blackberry but unfortunetly the blackberry was hard to upkeep and big big big. also anyone considering getting the Pearl dont. go with the classic jog wheel the rollerball on the peral is clunky and badly designed in my opinion

also the speakerphone was well made usualy on most flip phones ive noticed the speakerphone to sound like crap this one is very clear
phones smaller then my friends LG 9600 and smaller then my girlfriends razor i already have everyone at work going "Ahhh" when i flip the phone both ways and it is pretty friggen sexy phone aside from some of the color black and silver may have ben more popular but the color dosent bother me battery life is good not as good as my old LG but far better then my blackberry i get about 3 hours on the phone and if you spend less time on v cast you get a good ammount of standby time. ringtones seem to be the hardest thing to get on this phone as far as syncing with the cable i dont want to spend 2$ a tone

accepts micro sd cards pretty sturdy im a cluts droped it 3 times already no scratch anyone considering switching from a blackberry to it. its good but the web browsers slower but then again theres no expensive data charge

screens bright in any condition readable in bright and low light

well i think that pretty much answers it all. video is nice can be slighly laggy in playback no ghosting though interface is well designedi like the new menu system that there using

17. Posted by xmadenkoreax Tue Apr 03, 2007 12:40 am

does anyone know what kind of games does this phone supports?

18. Posted by paperstreet Tue Apr 03, 2007 7:00 pm

vzwhub.com, then search the games. The games will tell you what handsets are compatible.

19. Posted by SCHMST1 Wed Apr 04, 2007 9:46 am

no, you will not be able to use this handset in europe. verizon wireless runs on cdma technology, and you need to have a phone that knows what service network you're running off of. the samsung i730 will be the only phone that you'll be able to use there.

Can anyone tell me if I will be able to use this phone in Europe?

20. Posted by SCHMST1 Wed Apr 04, 2007 9:48 am

the color is champaign. very nice. sort of feminine, but you'll see past the color for all the functions

What color is it?is it like that cream color or is it just a different color in real life?

21. Posted by skylar112 Wed Apr 04, 2007 2:16 pm

I have this phone and absolutely love it, I will say that the "P" button can be impossible at times. I had a LG Chocolate phone for 3 days before this and absolutely hated it. Though I will say the LG phone had a better camera. This phone plays MP3s, however I'm having trouble with some of the MP3s. Some of them aren't getting recognized by the phone so they don't play, but it shows that they are in the micro SD memory though. Also does anyone know how I can get video clips into micro SD so the phone will play it and recognize it? Does it have to be in a certain format?

22. Posted by a8ball Wed Apr 04, 2007 3:43 pm

Found the problem with some MP3's showing on the card but not being recognized with the phone. The name has too many characters. Dont know what the max is for the phone but when I shortened the names on the MP3's that weren't being seen they came right up on the phone. I have the same question about the video format though

23. Posted by paperstreet Fri Apr 06, 2007 12:04 am

For the characters in the name of the mp3, make sure it's alphanumeric, no other symbols. I believe the phone has capability for 1000 song titles, even if more memory is available.

24. Posted by enos316 Fri Apr 06, 2007 8:19 am

Hey all, just got this phone yesterday and really like it so far. As such, I have some n00bie questions.

Just wondering if someone would be kind enough to link to the hardware required to download MP3s, etc to the phone?

I figure I can get a memory chip on Newegg, but as far as a data cable or a program to use for the transfer I'm a bit lost. I read about BitPim, but I wasn't sure if it supported this phone.

Thanks for the help!

25. Posted by taz_zilla Tue Apr 10, 2007 2:57 pm

I just got this phone and like it a lot. It lists for $149 but was discounted $50 + $99 for two year, so buying on line only had to pay tax! icon_wub.gif

The screen is nice, I have not gotten BitPim to work yet, hopefully they will come out with support for it soon. I ordered the Data pack with the phone for like $30 which comes with the data cable and adapter and CD. It was listed as VCast accessory or such. BitPim finds it as other CDMA phone, this gives me access to Filesystem files. (It locks out most use of them)

I bought Sonic and it is fast for such a small screen, but decent graphics. I have some games I purchased for my LG phone that I want to transfer over, but am not sure how to do that yet icon_ninja.gif

The side flip is great, although a lot of the features require the landscape mode, which is annoying.

The keys are very small and the numbers are hard to use due to small labels on the keys (due to haveing letters on them also). I am sure I will get used to it.

Navigation is good, the user interface is almost identical to the LG - VX8000.

Mark

26. Posted by talktome Wed Apr 11, 2007 10:01 pm

i have had this phone just over two weeks now, and i can say that this is the best phone i have ever had.

I debated buying it because i thought maybe it was designed more for younger people ( I am in my early 50's)

I am so happy i bought it. It makes texting so much faster. Phone calls are Clear not tinny, no echo's. It is stylish. I love the color. Verizon is notorious for boring silver phones.

I am getting Great reception. I deliberately went to area's where reception is flaky, and i had great reception. The vibrate is so much better than my E815's. The sound of the ringtone's is loud enought to hear in a busy store. This phone is great!

Yes, you do have to open the phone to change the volume of the ringtone or to put it on vibrate, or to use the voice command if you dont have your bluetooth ear piece on, but so what!

Very happy i bought it.

I'm looking to upgrade from my lg vx 6100. i need something that will sync with ms outlook so i can get all of my meetings onto my phone. does anyone know if this phone has the capability? thanks!

28. Posted by Purerock Wed Apr 25, 2007 11:22 am

I just bought one also. I previously had a Samsung T809, and regarding mp3s as ringtones, there is a trick to get the your own mp3 to work as ringtones on the T809, I will see if the u740 works the same way. so far I like it alot tho. As for videos, you have to format the videos ar .3gp files, at least this is how the T809 worked. I already have the Samsung mobile software and cable that converts music/video files to the right format.

29. Posted by Purerock Thu Apr 26, 2007 10:51 am

hey, does anyone know if the Samsung PC Studio software has been updated to recognize the u740? I just tried hooking up to my PC here at work and it does not see my phone. I also tried checking for updates and I am getting the infamous "no internet connection/check back later" error. I'll try at home and see what happens

30. Posted by planetjeffy Mon Apr 30, 2007 10:12 pm

I am getting terrible reception but want to keep this killer phone. Does anyone know how to hook up an external antenna to this phone? Can you hook one up thru the headphone/power connector they give you?

31. Posted by thoOo Tue May 01, 2007 10:02 pm

i got this phone last month and its great. mp3 and video is great. video and cam is great. Cam quality is awesome. the screen on the phone is big enough to watch videos. but the negative part is that recording video quality is bad. and the buttons are small but u will get used to it. other than that this phone is perfect. the reception is great also i even got connections down my basement.

32. Posted by Purerock Wed May 02, 2007 10:08 am

although the screens are fairly nice, it is difficult to figure out the correct format and size of photos that will look good in both the portrait mode and the landscape mode. Seems the preloaded pics are 176x184, but when I've loaded the same size photos on the phone they look horrible. Oh well, I will keep messin with it.

33. Posted by Bustertb Wed May 02, 2007 5:01 pm

I really want a phone with a Qwerty keypad but I don't need a smartphone. I really wanted to get this phone but my contract isn't up till next year so I'd have to pay $243 for it. And I might have if the screen had a better resolution, but I'm not paying that kind of money for resolution like that.

I was considering the Envy but I don't want to carry a brick phone. Really liked the size of the U740.

Hopefully they will update it with a better screen and then I'll buy it.

34. Posted by Purerock Wed May 02, 2007 5:05 pm

Im not saying the resolution is bad, just I am use to the one screen type of phone. Since this one has 2 screens, and photos on the portrait mode LCD look excellent but you cant see the whole photo in landscape mode. Know what I mean?

35. Posted by lizi737 Wed May 09, 2007 12:40 am

Hey. has anyone figured out the code so you can enable the phones mp3 player to recognize them and play them. i have verizon and they block it so you have to go throught there vcast and pay. oh no. and my bf just figured it out with his other phone, but can't find one for the u740.

also, i'm a college chick, and i LOVE this phone. i went thought 3 phones in the last month, including a smart phone the treo, but it was too big but i loved the qwerty keyboard so i had to get this phone. listening to music on it rocks, or alteast only the ringtones i'v gotten sofar. the ones that come loaded on it, maybe 10, SUCK. maybe thats verizon again, i don't know.

anyways, can someone please put the code out there if they know it, b/c the phone is kinda newish its not out there anywhere yet.

Thanks Much

and the screen is vibrant and clear. i LOVE it. just b/c the pictures don't show big when its in the landscape mode is no reason to push it aside.

36. Posted by Purerock Wed May 09, 2007 10:49 am

Hey Lizi, search the internet for Samsung U740 USB drivers, and you will see a site where you can download the Music Essentials program for this phone. From there, if you have mp3s on your home/work computer, just hook up the USB cable and follow the directions to transfer all the songs your phone will hold. I also upgraded to a 1GB SD card (micro memory card) which holds alot of songs, pics, etc. Now as for ringtones, if you know how to cut down the mp3s to say 20-30 seconds, then save it as a new (smaller) mp3 file. Then rename that new file to song.mid instead of .mp3. (Just right click on the file name, and choose rename, change the extension from .mp3 to .mid). Then simply transfer the .mid files to your phone. I just email them to my phone, the address is yournumber@vzwpix.com. Then open your new messages on your phone, save the attachments as ringtones, and guess what, you now how all kinds of ringtones. works good and sounds perfect too.

"One function called MySounds allows users to record up to 60 seconds of an audio track and then set it as a ringtone or alarm clock sound or attach the clip to a text messenger."

How do I set a recording as a ringtone?

38. Posted by reston20191 Sun May 13, 2007 3:08 pm

I got the phone on Friday, and I love this phone, but like I said only one small problem, I can't figure out how to turn the sleep timer off. The music that it plays sounds great and is extremely easy to use.

Does anyone have this phone? Any comments on it's performance?

I have the backlight set to always stay on.but when I dial 511 (local traffic line) the keypad backlight shuts off.is there anyway to keep this light on throughout the call or at least for a few more seconds so I can hit more numbers needed by the Traffic line?

45. Posted by spsasso Fri Jan 11, 2008 12:16 pm

has anyone added ringtones on this phone without going through vcast?

46. Posted by Trinary Thu Jan 24, 2008 4:24 am

ring tones on the sch-u740 are easy enough. anything normal mp3 format will work. ( i found that encoding at 96 Kbps @ 44100Hz or 80 Kbps @ 32000 Hz are the best. Make sure you normalize at about -3 dB)

There are a few ways of transferring you created ring tones to the phone. easiest method is to use BitPim. The latest version will actually pick up the 740 naturally. If you don't have the data cable, you can use a memory card. the catch with the memory card is that the MP3's have to have a ID3 tag and have the file extension changed from .mp3 to .mid, move them to the sounds folder on the card, put the card in the phone and then txt the sound to yourself to transfer it to the ring tone section (file bust be smaller then 230kb). the last option is to send the ringtone to the phone using PixPlace.

47. Posted by Trinary Thu Jan 24, 2008 4:30 am

In case anyone cares, samsung put out a s/w patch for the phone that fixed BT reception, Fixed the keypad backlight issue, and fixed it so VZNav dosn't turn off when you close the phone and it'll keep giving you directions in closed mode.

The issue is, they retraced the patch. Apparently there was a serious issue with the patch that needed to be reworked. I can get more about the patch notes if anyone is interested.

48. Posted by davemcsjr Fri Jan 25, 2008 3:10 pm

notes arent necessary.just let us know when you see it has been reworked and re-released.

Can anyone tell me how to change the clock on the sch-u740 to digital? thanks

50. Posted by wltjr Wed Apr 09, 2008 1:13 am

Seems to be a 42 character limit on the file names, I assume for both mp3 and wma formats/extensions. The extension seems to be required, and with it, it's a total of 46 characters. I tried without icon_sad.gif no mime.

Thankfully my laptop has mmc/sd/etc card slot, so $8 1gb sd card from NewEgg. I can copy mp3s directly to the sd card icon_smile.gif Running linux(gentoo), so it's just a straight forward operation, but should be the same on any OS that can mount sd media, of course with a sd drive icon_smile.gif

Now to get a cable so I can plug it into my car. I love the phone, short of Brew OS, sucks, no SSH client. But I have this stupid dongle to plug in, just so I can plug in head phones, etc. But it's a micro size, which is a PITA to find a cable for. Radioshack had a connector to upscale to normal size, but doesn't work. icon_sad.gif Guess I have to by some Samsung specific piece etc.

Also phone losses appeal in car with dongle, cord to radio, and car charger plugged into dongle. Starts to look kinda hooky, but wait, there's more. I can plug in another dongle, and extend it even further? wtf

Bluetooth is nice, lappy also has that. But only transferred contact info, which isn't stored on sd card so that's nice icon_smile.gif

All around good phone, had it for ~1yr including sd card and just now put mp3's on it. Finally, F vcast icon_smile.gif

this is for Beth 076 I just purchased this phone and like it a lot. Please explain to me how to text by talking into the phone. I looked in the manual and couldnt find anything about it but that is really amazing! I do a lot of texting and could really use this feature icon_shifty.gif There are probably a lot of things about this phone that I am not aware of, if anyone can tell me how to do this i would appreciate it. icon_exclaim.gif Stephanie
