Based on the Symbian operating system (v9.1) and UIQ 3.0, the P1i offers broad potential for multimedia applications from operators / carriers, content owners and third party developers. In short, the P1i is a device as small as a standard phone that offers flexible ways to work:

- Dual function keyboard - full alpha-numeric (e.g. QWERTY) text input combined with one hand phone usability
- Choice of text input method including handwriting and word completion
- Push email enabled including support for Exchange ActiveSync and BlackBerry Connect
- Integrated WLAN and VoIP enabled
- 3.2-megapixel camera with business card scanner
- Large 2.6-inch touchscreen with a Transflective Display that is easier to view in bright light conditions

The Sony Ericsson P1i can handle corporate or personal emails, contacts and calendar. It supports push email services including Exchange ActiveSync and BlackBerry Connect and allows for remote wiping of email and PIM data; critical in the event of the phone being stolen or misplaced.

The P1i lets users read and edit documents on the move, whether Microsoft Word, PowerPoint or Excel. It also ships with a desk stand and USB cable in-box, making it straightforward to synchronise with a PC.

Both UMTS and integrated WLAN provide for high-speed Web browsing and data downloads, plus email at a rate and performance consumers can enjoy from their office desktop. The P1i is also VoIP enabled for making calls over the internet.

Surfing the Web is intuitive with the Opera Web Browser, displaying pages in horizontal, wide screen aspect. The large, touchscreen QVGA display can be seen and used even in bright environments due to the Transflective Display. The 3.2-megapixel camera takes shots to store or share via Picture Blogging. It does away with the need to collect stacks of business cards when traveling. Just take a close-up shot of a business card and the card scanner transfers the contact details directly into the phonebook.

As well as a business tool, the Sony Ericsson P1i also serves as an advanced multimedia companion. Its music and video player mean that favorite tunes and video clips can be taken on the 512 MB Memory Stick Micro (M2) provided. Catch the latest news via the on-board FM Radio or stream mobile TV direct to the large screen.

The Sony Ericsson P1i is a Tri-Band GPRS 900/1800/1900 and UMTS 2100 handset with Wi-Fi 802.11b and will be available in selected markets from Q3 2007.

I have a P990i, and have had the P910i and P900 before it. I am increasingly frustrated with the bugs and glitches with the phones to the point that I've e-mailed Sony Ericsson to tell them of my problems.

The P1i seems to be the replacement, but I shall have to think long and hard before 'upgrading' to what I feel may be a missed opportunity.

I've only just got my P990i working more or less the way I want it after 6 months, why should I change to a phone that does not have significantly different capabilities.

The removal of the flip would be a good thing for me, I've always used the thing mainly as a phone when on the move and the fact that several vital functions can only be used with the flip open has been awkward to say the least. Taking the flip off the P990i made it even harder to use! I can use the numeric keypad for any 'typing' I have to do.

The screen is now brighter but there is no increase in the number of colours, 262k when many other phones are offering true colour 16M colours!

The camera is the tried and tested 3.2MP cybershot offering, but again other manufacturers are offering 5MP and with greater to follow (Asia had a 10MP phone last year) in an apparent bid to have us leave our digital cameras behind and have ONE device for all uses. As a phone 3.2MP is OK, as a camera replacement it is average.

I hope that the extremely long delay in starting up applications (the camera in particular) has been addressed. You see something that you want to photograph and by the time the application starts that moment has passed.

The provision of a 3.5mm stereo jack socket would convince me to leave my MP3 player at home, as it is I have to use an awkward conversion lead to plug in speakers or headphones (which buzzes when plugged into the twin port charger).

The software for playing the MP3s does not currently have the facility to boost the sound level of low recordings, which would be a great tool.

Would a decent Sat Nav system be available?

I'll suspend my gripe for now, to allow others to respond. I look forward to reading other's views.
