AT&T Earnings Show iPhone Not that Big of a Hit

AT&T said today that it activated 146,000 iPhones after the first two days of sales, which fell on the final days of the second quarter. Apple shares fell the most in six months after analysts said demand may be slowing for the iPhone, which Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs expects to become the company's third major business. This is way below analysts' estimates, which had ranged from 500,000 to 1 million.
The iPhone - part iPod, cell phone and Internet device - was first announced in January. Jobs has projected sales of 10 million iPhones in its first year. With two models priced at $499 and $599 depending on storage capacity, that would generate more than $5 billion in additional retail sales. Apple's shares had climbed from about $95 in January to a record high $143.75 on Friday.
Analysts cautioned against reading too much into AT&T's activation numbers, saying the actual number of iPhones sold may be much higher but was not reflected in the figure because many users had activation problems and couldn't sign up for a few days.
Weighing 135 grams (3.8 ounces), the iPhone has an Apple OS X operating system and 4 or 8 GB of storage. It is able to play videos as well as music and has a 3.5-inch screen.

You mean the ultra expensive, unproven, network specific phone isn't doing that good?
Strange.

Ya, trimix, if you were looking at figures posted beyond the first 30 hours of sales (still far higher than any other cellphone device's intro) you'd take a step back.

Let's see:
1. No MMS - so you can't snap a photo and send it to someone's cell phone. And even if you use their "cell phone email address" you still get a message with a link and an id/pw to view the photo. LAME
2. Photos you take are all titled "photo". LAME
3. You can't copy/paste. LAME
4. You can't forward a text message. LAME
5. You can't download new ringtones. You're stuck with what comes preloaded on the phone. LAME
6. You can't save images from the internet onto the phone. You have to SYNC whatever photos you don't actually TAKE with the phone itself - via Itunes - from your laptop or desktop. LAME
7. The touch screen is fancy and works well. COOL
8. The net works reasonably well. COOL
9. You can't attach a picture to an email. LAME
10. The email program inside the Iphone allows the minimum automatic refresh at only every 15 minutes. Blackberry users get email PUSHED to them instantly. LAME

This is one where waiting for the Verizon version of iPhone will be worth it. Great phone concept, bugs need working out and I have never had any luck with AT&T wireless.

Wonder How much more sales they would of make if they would of chosen Sprint and Verizon. I would of bought it if it was with sprint. But won't sign a 2 year contract with ATT

Initial sales are not indicative of product quality, or overall success.
