T-Mobile Invests in Femtocells

T-Mobile Venture Fund has made a strategic investment in femtocell developer, Ubiquisys, joining Google and original investors Accel Partners, Atlas Venture and Advent Venture Partners.
Femtocells are small consumer devices the size of a paperback book that connect to the home broadband connection. Mobile users benefit from excellent, high-speed 3G coverage using their existing handset, as well as low-cost voice and data services in the home. Femtocells also allow operators to more effectively bundle mobile and fixed broadband services, and offer a new generation of web 2.0 mobile applications based on home presence and sharing data with the home network.
"Femtocells are fundamental to the future of mobile. They solve the coverage dilemma whilst lowering costs for operators and consumers alike. They pave the way for new mobile services that put the mobile phone at the centre of the connected home, and allow operators to offer improved fixed broadband + mobile bundles." said Axel Kolb, Fund Manager, T-Mobile Venture Fund. "We identified Ubiquisys as the clear leader in this space, with an innovative product, a strong deployment ecosystem, and unique software to enable femtocell-ready applications."
"Femtocells seamlessly join-up mobile phones, home networks and broadband internet for the first time. They also offer mobile operators a completely new method for deploying new network technologies," said Chris Gilbert, CEO of Ubiquisys. "We are delighted to have the support of one of the industry's most prominent venture groups, a company that shares our view of how of femtocells can revolutionise the mobile experience."
T-Mobile's strategic investment supports the drive towards the first commercial launches, anticipated towards the end of 2008.

Will you quit bashing tmobile? Do you have any idea what's wrong with sprint right now? I'm assuming you also think half of the world is copying sprint since they are investing in the same technology.

Fact Is, sprint has had more innovations in the mobile phone industry than any other carrier in the world. t mobile might be big in europe, but in the united states they are the worst of the top 5 carriers. t mobile has tried and failed to copy everyone else. sprint uses pcs technology, the t mobile copies. sprint offers sprint2home and pick 3 as a retention offer, t mobile puts out myfavs. and now sprint announces in home femtocells and now t mobile copies.

Actually No, I Do Help Alot Of People. I Just Think It's Funny How When One Company Does Something All The Others Fall In Line Like Domino's. There's No Originality In Business Any More. Just Like The Cable Providers, Now All Of Them Have Some Sort Of Bundle Deal Involving Phone, Cable, And Internet.

The fact is iowa that Sprint does not create it's own technology, they use the technology that is created by other companies. Then when you factor in the fact that the US receives this technology after just about every other place in the world how can you say that an American company is being copied by another American company. For the most part we are copying Asain or European companies as far as mobile technology. Now as a T-Mobile customer who has had Verizon, Cingular(pre AT&T), and Sprint I must say that for the money T-Mobile is the best. If you want to pay more AT&T and Verizon are a close first and second, and Sprint is the worst. Living in Northern NJ(right outside NYC) Sprint has the most deadspots and disconnected calls in the area. Of the couple of friends that still carry one(for work purposes for direct connect) they all have another phone carrier for everything else.

Direct Connect Is Nextel. Nextel Runs Off A Different Network. Keep Believing What The Media Tells You. Fact Is The Only Reason Europe Picked Up Wireless Faster Is Because They Didn't Have The Copper Wire System Like Ours. In Fact, They're Landline System Is Still Moot. It Was Just Easier And Cheaper To Put Up Cell Phone Towers Then Lay Millions Of Miles Of Wire. Not To Mention Soon GSM is an inferior technology. but sprint has always been an innovator. from when they just sold long distance to now.

Though I've noticed A LOT of bashing on your part, I have no means to offend you. That's business, dude. It's the art of competition and it pushes innovation. If one company dominated the market with their technology and no one "copied" that company, why would any business want to move forward? There would be no need to. They would rake in all the profit and consumers couldn't want something not created. But because there are mimicked technologies and operations, we get the beauty of constant progression which gives you and me the luxury of having an easy life. Please take that into consideration and appreciation.

Well Said! i'm just tired of everyone bashing sprint and rating them solely on cs rather than what they can do for the customer. glad to see someone else with a level head.

Glad you see it the way I do. I'm not here to bash either, I just hope to open up a new perspective to those caught up in bad situations. T-Mobile has treated me very well and I plan to return the favor. Hopefully you can ignore those who bash Sprint just because they had a bad experience. Someone can have 5 great experiences with a company, but only one will turn them array and they will remember the negative. Sad, but true.

Technically TMobile didn't copy Sprint in it's technology, TMobile is a GSM carrier and Sprint is CDMA. Next, MOST of Sprint's network is digital roaming, on the 800mhz frequency, while TMobile only runs on 1900mhz, what many call PCS. So TMobile is sticking to the PCS better then Sprint does if you want to look at it that way. Although that does hurt TMobile's coverage, as they could expand quite a lot and use the 800mhz frequency as well.

As a dealer, I can get one of their cards for $30 a month. Not sure how well it would work where I am at however.
