Panasonic revealed plans to include plasma video displays for cell phones to use with AT&T's recently announced Mobile TV service.

"For nearly a decade, Panasonic's engineers have been secretly working on a thin, lightweight low-voltage compact plasma display," stated Mark Balsama, Panasonic Communication Systems Group Marketing Manager. "Many of our new phones will have vibrant color plasma screens that can run on just 1.5 volts and won't require any additional wiring or special power supplies. We'll be able to put plasma in cell phones, business phones, consumer phones, corded phones, cordless phones, and even door intercom monitors and fax machines. We will revolutionize the consumer electronics business, as Panasonic has done many times before."

Panasonic says it will be able to incorporate newly developed, miniature plasma displays in cell phones starting this fall. They will rival OLED displays for brightness, contrast and thinness, and can be manufactured for much less money.

Well everyone knows that Panasonic is a bastion of current cell phone manufacturing, but at least the technology is out, and could be available to companies that may know what to do with it. I guess that the question to ask next is, how is it's power consumption next to OLED, and does it get as warm as plasma televisions do?

Or how about your home screen getting burnt on the display if you leave your phone open too long.

I imagine that will work like the OLED's and fade to black as it is left open. You know, I had one of the first OLED's on the market, but it wasn't in a phone, it is in my Pioneer Car CD player, back when it only did two colors.
