Verizon Wireless, Alltel, Sprint Nextel, and U.S. Cellular each ranked highest in wireless call quality in their respective regions, according to a J.D. Power and Associates study released on Wednesday.
Verizon Wireless lead the way with the highest ranking in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, West, and tied with Sprint Nextel in the Southwest Region. Alltel ranked the highest in the Southeast, and tied with U.S. Cellular for the North Central Region. The study measured wireless call quality based on seven problem areas that impacted overall carrier performance: dropped calls; static/interference; failed connection on the first try; voice distortion; echoes; no immediate voice mail notification; and no immediate text message notification. Call quality issues were measured as problems per 100 (PP100) calls, where a lower score reflected fewer problems and higher quality. "Carriers that offer superior network quality will improve their likelihood of attracting new customers and will increase customer retention," said Kirk Parsons, Senior Director of J.D. Power and Associates. "Improving network quality is a beneficial financial incentive for wireless carriers." The study, conducted between February and June, received responses from 22,407 wireless users.
