Internet search leader Google today unveiled a handset developed with T-Mobile to compete with Apple's hot-selling iPhone.
The T-Mobile G1, the first mobile device powered by Google's open-source Android software, has a large touch screen similar to the iPhone, but it also packs a 3.0-megapixel camera with photo-sharing capability, a trackball, a slide-out keyboard and easy access to Google's email and mapping programs.
Google is giving away Android for free, and opening the operating system to third-party developers who can create their own programs. The software has been seen as Google's way of getting a foothold on the mobile Internet, which industry watchers see as a big growth area, and in particular as a way to make advertising on cell phone screens a viable business.
The new phone will feature Android Market, where customers can find and download applications to expand and personalize their phone.
Amazon.com said its digital music store will be loaded on the G1 allowing users to search, download, buy and play more than six million songs, pitting the device directly against the iPhone.
"Increasingly, connectivity does not just mean a phone call, but rather access to the world's information," said Andy Rubin, Senior Director of Google. "With Android, we've opened the mobile Web not only for millions of users, but also to mobilize the developer community that understands the next most important platform in the world rests in the palm of our hand."
T-Mobile customers in the U.S. can pre-order the G1 at www.t-mobileg1.com . The device will be available at T-Mobile stores and online in the U.S. beginning Oct. 22, for a price of $179 with a two-year voice and data agreement. The T-Mobile G1 will also be available in the United Kingdom beginning in November, and across Europe in the first quarter of 2009. Countries include Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and the Netherlands.

I alway's watch Ebay to see just how popular a phone will get. If sales are high in dollars and cents then that model will sell out, also the stores will be on back order in a hurry. I'm glad I have my order for 2 of them in early.

The G1 Is only popular to t mobile users. it is not an iphone killer. tmobile doesn't have the network for that. a phone is only as good as the network it's used on. you want a real iphone killer? look up the htc touch pro or htc fuze. (Same Exact Phone Two Different Carriers.) It's a quad band phone, true world phone, expandable memory, and so much more. including a full slide out keyboard That's big enough for even fat finger people to use.
