does anyone know if, because it's a smartphone, the text messages will be restricted to 160 characters?

The text messages is restricted to 160 characters per message if you are sending a text message to someone who has a different carrier than you. If you are with Verizon and texting someone using AT&T, you are limited to 60 characters per message. If you are texting someone who has Verizon, there is no limit and the message will arrive correctly.

You can use the SMS or email option to get around the limit, at least for sending. But the recipient's carrier may restrict the length and not deliver if non-verizon
