Sprint wants President-elect Barack Obama's transition team to fund a $2 billion emergency network to make first responders better able to communicate during disasters.
Obama's transition team has sought ideas from industry to solve communications problems that arose after disasters like the September 11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina.
Sprint, a supplier of equipment such as push-to-talk phones used by police and fire departments, is lobbying lawmakers to include its proposal in the billions flagged for technology in the economic stimulus plan working its way through Congress.
The company's plan calls for 100 satellite-based light trucks that would react to emergencies, and 100,000 or more mobile devices and equipment at up to 40 pre-selected locations.
Sprint says the sites would allow equipment to be shipped and arrive anywhere in the U.S. within four hours.
