Unionized workers at AT&T's wireless division voted to authorize a strike if the company cannot agree on a new labor contract with the Communications Workers of America.
The union said 85 percent of votes cast were in favor of strike authorization. The current contract, which expires at midnight Saturday covers 20,000 workers.
Critical issues include compensation, employment security and working conditions.
The strike authorization is a routine move in the process of negotiating a new contract.
"Bargaining is continuing and the parties remain hopeful that a new agreement will be negotiated by the expiration of the contract tomorrow," said Michael Coe, spokesman at AT&T.
The union has not set a date for a possible strike.
