AT&T, the nation's largest telecommunications company, plans to add 3,000 jobs this year and invest between $17 billion and $18 billion to drive growth by expanding wireless and broadband networks to provide more coverage.
The Dallas, Texas-based company said despite the job additions in its wireless and broadband units, it expects to proceed with the nearly 12,000 job cuts it announced in December."Demand for broadband continues to grow as new applications emerge and customers embrace them, leading to data traffic on our network growing more than 50 percent year-over-year on average," said Chief Executive Randall Stephenson. AT&T also said it will expand its high-speed third-generation, or 3G, mobile broadband service to 20 new markets this year, in addition to creating 2,100 new cell sites across the country.
