Sprint today detailed plans to offer its high-speed 4G network in 10 additional cities, the same network announced by Clearwire earlier.
The Overland Park, Kan.-based company was the first to market with a 4G network, debuting Xohm 4G in Baltimore, with an average speed four times faster than current 3G rates.
Then Clearwire debuted 4G in Portland. But shortly after, Sprint bought 51 percent of Clearwire.
Now Sprint says it will launch service in Portland, and it's new markets will open at the same time as Clearwire's new markets.
Cities that can expect 4G service this year include Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Philadelphia and Seattle.
Sprint also expects to launch service in Boston, Houston, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. in 2010.
Both Sprint and Clearwire will offer the same signal, but there will be some competition between the two companies.
"Our aggressive expansion of Sprint 4G service demonstrates our commitment to provide 4G capabilities and devices." said Todd Rowley, Vice President of Sprint 4G. "These capabilities enable significantly enhanced performance and productivity for our customers."
Sprint offers a dual-band 3G, 4G USB modem for the laptop, whereas Clearwire provides a 4G modem only.
