Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless carrier, will begin selling netbooks -- a cheaper, more basic version of a notebook -- as early as next quarter.
The Basking Ridge, N.J.-based company is developing the devices with more than one PC maker.
Netbooks are scaled-down versions of laptops that typically sell for less than $500.
Verizon Wireless and AT&T see these devices used mainly for data as the pool of new phone subscribers shrinks.
AT&T and RadioShack introduced a netbook that runs on the carrier's third-generation network in December.
The Verizon netbooks will initially be sold in the company's stores, and retail partners also may stock them. Price and plan details aren't complete.
