Smartphone maker Palm is inviting developers to create applications for its eagerly-awaited Pre touch screen handheld that will be taking on heavyweights such as Apple's iPhone and Research in Motion's BlackBerry devices.
The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company said its Palm App Catalog will launch when Pre devices hit store shelves later this quarter -- a trend started by Apple's App Store for iPhones.Programmers will be able to submit Pre applications to the App Catalog after it opens. "Developers are an incredibly important part of the webOS ecosystem," said Michael Abbott, Palm senior vice president of application software and services. "We're eager to get the SDK into their hands." They can apply online at http://developer.palm.com to get a Mojo software developers kit (SDK) that lets them design applications for Pre devices. Once a pioneer in handheld devices, Palm has been suffering hard times lately. The touch screen Pre features a new operating system and allows users to move seamlessly from one application to another, similar to a desktop computer, and run multiple applications simultaneously. Palm did not mention a release date for either the Pre or the App Catalog.
