AT&T, the second-largest U.S. wireless provider, today introduced FamilyMap, a new tool that lets families track members' mobile phones via the Web.
The Dallas, Texas-based company said the service lets Moms and Dads track their kids on a map with surrounding landmarks, including schools, parks and custom-labeled frequently visited places.Customers can switch between satellite and interactive street views, and customize maps using names and photos for each device tied to the account. AT&T said the principal account owner controls the privacy settings and only phones on the same billing account can be tracked. Schedule checks can also be set up for certain times so, for example, parents can get automatic text or email messages assuring them their kids are home after school. "AT&T FamilyMap is a terrific tool to help busy families keep track of each other, as well as a great way to check up on loved ones for any reason, such as to touch base with elderly family members," said Mark Collins, vice president of Voice and Data Products for AT&T. "More than 60 percent of AT&T wireless customers are part of a family plan or multiple line account, so there's a considerable number of our subscribers whom we believe will find this service beneficial." The maps can be viewed on any AT&T postpaid phone or PC. After a free 30-day trial period, the cost is $10 a month for up to two phones or $15 for up to five phones.
