Verizon plans to launch a new portable hotspot device that creates a personal Wi-Fi cloud to share high-speed Internet with gadgets such as laptops, netbooks, cameras, gaming devices or portable MP3 players.
Made by Novatel, the MiFi 2200 is tiny -- the thickness of three credit cards -- and small enough to fit in a pocket. It has built-in EV-DO Rev. A and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g modems and delivers high-speed 3G Internet connectivity from Verizon's network to up to five Wi-Fi-enabled gadgets.
"With projected growth rates of over 30 percent for Wi-Fi mobile phones, Mi-Fi will be of great benefit to both business customers and consumers," said Mike Lanman, chief marketing officer for Verizon. "It gives customers the flexibility to transform their Wi-Fi-enabled consumer electronics into mobile broadband devices and to choose how and when they need to be connected at a price point that will match most budgets."
Verizon said the Mi-Fi will be available starting May 17 for $100 with a $50 rebate. Customers can subscribe to a $40 montly plan for 250-megabytes of data or a $60 monthly plan for 5-gigabytes of data. A 24-hour "DayPass" costs $15.
