Motorola W7 Uses Body Movement to Perform Tasks

Wed May 13, 2009 10:35 pm

Troubled U.S. phone maker Motorola today announced the W7 Active Edition, a motion-enabled slider that senses the body's motions to perform tasks such as launching its built-in pedometer, silencing incoming calls or controling the music player.

The Schaumburg, Ill.-based company said the W7 uses a built-in accelerometer to feel the body's movement, orientation and hand gestures.

It responses to a flip of the phone and silences incoming calls, snoozes the alarm clock and pauses the music. A flick of the wrist to the left or right can move between music tracks and photos.

Shaking the device twice can launch pre-set application.

The W7 also comes pre-loaded with motion-controlled games.

An integrated pedometer allows users to create a personal profile to set goals, complete workouts and review summary reports.

Additional features include a 2.0-megapixel camera, MP3 player, FM Radio and up to 8GB optional external memory.

Motorola has been struggling, reporting widening losses of a hefty 45 percent from a year ago.

The company enjoyed success with its popular RAZR handset launched in 2005 but has lost considerable ground to Apple and BlackBerry maker Research in Motion as major handset makers more towards smartphones.
