Apple today officially released its long-awaited iPhone OS 3.0 software, updating 45 software patches to fix security vulnerabilities in its popular iPhone and iPod Touch devices.
The company said the update will also add new features such as cut, copy and paste, MMS, and push notifications.
Hackers have traditionally focused attacking PCs running Microsoft's Windows operating system because it sits on more than 90 percent of the world's personal computers. But analysts predict that with the sales of smartphones soaring as the PC industry slumps, Apple's iPhones and iPods will be the new targets.
"They are no longer dumb devices used only to make phone calls said Joris Evers, a spokesman for anti-virus software maker McAfee. "They hold a wealth of personal information and in some cases are being used as electronic wallets,"
Apple rival Research in Motion recently issued a security patch for its popular BlackBerry, addressing a hole that had potential to let hackers use the device to break into corporate computer networks.
