Nokia, the world's top phone maker, today unveiled the 3720 Classic, a new rugged waterproof handset.
The Finnish company said the 3720 Classic is IP-54 certified to resist water, dust and shock. Its sealed, leak-proof design is encased in durable materials. The battery cover is locked with a screw to protect the battery and inner electronics from wet, dusty or muddy environments. The handset also features a large and bright 2.2-inch screen, Bluetooth technology, an LED flashlight, long-lasting battery, Nokia Maps and a 1GB microSD memory card. "The Nokia 3720 classic has been specifically engineered to withstand the splashes, bumps and drops that come with the terrain," said Markku Suomi, Nokia's vice president. "It is equally functional on the inside -- for people who want a long-lasting and reliable mobile phone." Nokia said the 3720 Classic will start shipping this summer and sell for $175 before subsidies and taxes. Last month, Verizon released the rugged Casio Exilim -- a similar waterproof camera phone military tested for water, salt-fog, shock, dust, solar radiation, altitude, and low and high temperature storage.
